It's not for me, but for DD3 (21). Where would I find a lovely, classic looking chain (about 20" or 50 cms) that could be worn alone or with a pendant? Obviously, a good price would help. Thanks!

I began the search today- everything was really cheap looking, but costing a fortune. Goldsmiths looked at me like I was making an unreasonable request; they had nothing. Where else can I try?

With the price of gold having gone through the roof in the last few years, real gold (chains or otherwise) IS now unbelievably expensive. Does it have to be solid, or would you consider gold vermeil or gold plated?

Perhaps this sort of thing?

this one

or this one?

Along the right lines??

Greyvix - I'm assuming you don't want gold plated?

When do you need it for?

Have you tried Ebay? I flogged a few gold pieces which I thought were too nice to go for scrap value. I also bought a platinum ring, which I've had tested and is def. genuine for a quarter of what Ernest Jones wanted.

If your daughter isn't opposed to the idea, I am sure you will be able to find something suitable for a good price if you try an independent jeweller who specialises in 2nd hand jewellery. Most places have a few, it might be worth getting out the Yellow Pages and making some calls. I don't know where you live, but Brighton and Yorkshire stand out in my memory as having the most (and best) 2nd hand jewellery shops I have come across :).

Thanks for all the help, and I liked the links, but oas imagining a thicker chain.. It is part of her 21st birthday present (or would be, if I could find one). I would be happy to buy an antique or second hand one, but fear I have left it a bit late.
Ebay is an option I hadn't thought of, so will have a look. Thank you!
