Define your style and who is your style icon?

been thinking about this ... Who is your style icon ? I ve been making a mental list of mine ( suppose joining pinterest got me thinking! )
I must be very fickle though as my style icons vary depending on where I m going and my mood!! Naturally I suppose, as I m not going to wear the same stuff whilst running around after the dc s as heading to work / meeting friends for drinks etc
I think I aspire to a classic style- with a nod to various trends as I think classic can sometimes be a little bland on it s own ! Does that make sense?. However nowadays I do tend to have more of a mix of high st and some better more expensive lables for pieces that I think I ll wear lots or will last a few years/seasons (eg shoes, bags coats)
I dont think that s totally different ... so I m looking to see who my style icons are that I can take inspiration from...
I know who I am not, whom I dont take inspiration from!!... I m finding it difficult to find icons or people whose style I like though! Probably because I dont have a lot of time these for reading glossies (internt/blogs MN and busy work/family).
I like a lot of what I see Elle McPhearson And Claudia schiffer wearing when they re not on the red carpet Also love jessica alba.
So who is your style inspiration/icon whats your style?

Classic with a bit of girliness.
I don't have a style icon - I already know who I am and what I like - but Lauren Santo Domingo has a similar body shape and looking at her outfits is quite helpful for me.
Love Pinterest for general inspiration.

Edgy, contemporary, urban. I love Miranda Kerr's look, a good balance of masculine v feminine. I also really like Diane Kruger. I wouldn't want to slavishly copy anyone though, as I know what I like.

So good, i said it twice. Stupid iPhone.

MarshaBrady · 25/08/2012 09:30

I find it easier to define in a mix of images as it's mostly refined ie about colour and line. But not polished. From Celine to Preen.

Also stretches to include edgier and also feminine. With style icon there are lots of looks I like that fit above. I love the blonde with a strongish brow look eg Cara Delevingne (obvs she is younger so will be different). But pinterest is good for confirming what you like.

0lympia · 25/08/2012 10:24

kinda....... Blair Waldorf but age appropriate for 40s, so less girly than Blair Wardorf and also, on a budget, but apart from that, SNAP

I love her coats.

QueenCadbury · 25/08/2012 22:43

My icon is Kate moss. I just love how she looks effortlesslessly stylish and doesn't just follow trends. She knows what suits her and sticks to it.

PutIcecubesDownTheVestOfFear · 25/08/2012 23:04

Audrey Hepburn crossed with Zooey Deschanel - classic but with a few quirky, girly twists to make it more interesting. I'm pale, dark haired/eyed and small, so their style suits me. Would love to be able to pull off things that leggy amazonian blondes can but I don't even bother trying.

Turquoiseblue · 26/08/2012 07:15

I m loving pinterest for this. I supppose it got me thinking of categorising what I wear and how to dress (indulge my complusion to organise and categorise) ...Must get pinning and less browsing now though!
Donna I think that idea of looking at the body shape and how they dress it is what I ve been looking at too ...Though in reality I m a world away from claudia schiffer Smile
Amber... I love Miranda Kerr s style - she s not afraid to experiment but knows what suits her too.

I m a slow burner - trends take a time to grow on me - I ll see something new then think hmmm not for me.. but then find myself trotting the same trend a few weeks later! So not sure I could ever be truly edgy.
Queen - I dont always get Kate Moss, Sometimes she veers a little too much from effortless to dishevelled for me!

I like Carine Roitfield's look - sort of edgy but grown up (mebbe a bit too much black though). She never looks like the clothes are wearing her even though she has access to all those labels and she looks like she enjoys life Smile I'd love to see what she wear slobbing around at home though Grin

HecateHarshPants · 26/08/2012 07:53

I have no idea
I don't have one

Grin

I just wear the stuff I see that I think looks nice.

I tend to wear long tops with trousers. I wear bright colours. I don't dress all in dark colours. It's depressing Grin It's like a rainbow in my wardrobe Grin

It's like a rainbow in my wardrobe!

That is far more clear than what I put up there!

holler · 26/08/2012 07:57

Jennifer Aniston/Elle McP. Natural-classic-simple lines, no frills or flounces.

WhyTheBigPaws · 26/08/2012 08:08

I don't really have a style icon who's famous although I do like the way Jennifer Aniston dresses - she does formal and casual well. I'm more inspired by people in real life who have to dress within a budget and in a way that's practical for their lifestyle. I've got a couple of friends who have really got their own look and don't follow fashion as such and that's what I aspire to.

My style is quite relaxed and informal, I don't do smart well, always feel over-dressed and uncomfortable. I like simple shapes, clean lines and not too much pattern or detail - I am short and on the curvy side so have to dress carefully to flatter my shape. If I'm not careful simple and unfussy can equate to boring though so I'm learning to accessorise but it's tricky not looking too matchy matchy and 'done'.

Love the idea of using Pinterest for style and fashion stuff, have never looked at clothes on there

WhyTheBigPaws · 26/08/2012 08:10

That's a coincidence holler, I posted about JA without seeing you had also mentioned her. I thought she might be seen as too middle of the road and not 'edgy' enough for S&B!

holler · 26/08/2012 08:21

Haha, am fellow pinterest addict - will DM my username so we can share the JA non-edgy love Grin.

MarshaBrady · 26/08/2012 08:29

Must say Cara D isn't my style icon. But a favourite look along with a few others.

Think I have more affinity with labels. I can't think of a style icon, atm anyway. I do like Emmanuelle Alt's approach.

Yes get on pin it's quite quick once it's set up, then it's only a few minutes if you're following people.

noddyholder · 26/08/2012 08:40

I like Kate moss/ Helena Christensen combo in my dreams

WhyTheBigPaws · 26/08/2012 09:16

holler just followed you on Pinterest, I do have a style board which I didn't even remember I'd set up but it's mostly arty shots of Converse at the moment so clearly room for some inspiration!

DonaAna · 26/08/2012 09:42

For me it's also very useful to see what does not work on Lauren Santo Domingo - some looks are clearly too tricky to pull off and it's nice to see she's struggling with some of the same issues I am (although she has access to all designers).

HappyGirlNow · 26/08/2012 09:47

Diane Kruger, Carine Roitfield, Emmanuelle Alt, Charlie Theron and Olivia Palermo - love them all Grin

HappyGirlNow · 26/08/2012 09:48

*Who's Charlie Theron?! Charlize of course Blush

iliketea · 26/08/2012 09:49

In my head, it's audrey hepburn. In the mirror, it's more jo brand.

LadyKopperberg · 26/08/2012 09:51

Apparently my style is hooker according to my dp! Angry

I was wearing a bodycon dark red skirt, studded ankle boots, black tshirt, short black leather biker jacket. I told him he had a very large invoice coming! Grin

I don't really style myself on anyone but my normal wear is skinny fit jeans, red, blue, black, with a tucked in black tshirt, knee high boots and the short leather biker jacket. Sometimes a long necklace to break up the black.

I also have a fair amount of skater dresses, skinny belt around middle, ankle books and same jacket.

singaporeswing · 26/08/2012 10:04

I love how Olivia Palermo and Miranda Kerr put clothes together - I'm a big fan of simple layers, basic tshirts, blazers etc.

But with a body shape more like Kelly Brook, it doesn't necessarily suit me. Really tailored dresses suit me as do "occasion" dresses, but I find it hard to find casual day outfits that suit.
