First day, new job - wear suit?

Is it the 'done thing' to wear a suit on your first day of a new job?

I want to make a good impression, but also don't want to looking like I'm trying too hard Smile

I have a lovely dark blue suit and smart white shirt which I wore to interview, I wear it with brown heels.

Other outfit options:

Plain black jersey dress, dressed up with nice jewellery/belt/possibly pearl collar + heels

Black cropped slim fit trousers and lovely blouse + loafers or heels + black jacket

What to wear?? I'm stressing about it a bit - probably am channelling too much thought into this so I don't have to think about everything else that stresses me out about a new job! Hmm

I'd not wear the suit. Either of the other two sound lovely.

What is your job?

Slainte · 19/08/2012 09:13

I think the dress option sounds good, smart and approachable. Good luck in your new job.

Sorry, I should have said - it's an external communications role - PR basically. And first day is tomorrow!

I'll be a one-woman band most of the time in the local branch, so I'll pretty much set my own agenda clothes-wise I think Grin but it's training at HQ this week, so I want to make sure I pitch it right!

I'd go for the trouser combination.

Good luck. Tell us how it went.

dexter73 · 19/08/2012 11:52

I think the dress or the trousers sound absolutely fine. I can't decide between the two!

CoffeeMummy · 19/08/2012 15:36

Thanks everyone! I'd prefer not to wear the suit I think as I'm not a very 'dressy dressy' person anyway and I want to make sure I feel comfortable and therefore confident.

I'll probably do another last minute try-on tonight before I lay clothes out for the morning - the other aspect being I have to travel in the outfit too - a short plane journey early-ish in the morning, so this outfit has to do me for quite a long day!

One other additional question - I have black tights to wear with the black dress but it's supposed to be quite warm for the next couple of days. Acceptable to wear without tights - yes or no?

I'm not exactly super-tanned, so I'm concerned about the black dress/white skin combination - but I also don't want to swelter in the heat?!

I think dress without tights is fine and us what I do. Only on MN have I seen it said it's a no-no. Depends on industry. PR is probably fine.

Thanks again for the style advice ladies! Have survived first day - went for the cropped trouser/lovely blouse combo but my feet are killing me after a day in heels! Will be retreated to comfy loafers tomorrow methinks Smile.

No, no, keep up the style. Tomorrow you're meeting the people you'll actually work with, you need to keep making a good impression. You can relax a bit after a few weeks. No comfy loafers yet, although kitten heels or similxar Are OK :) good luck and enjoy your new job.
