Tell me where to find incredible, flattering jeans (please!)

I desperately need new jeans and seem to be finding it hard to find the 'magic' pair that make me look 10lbs lighter and a foot taller. I'm not fussy, I'm happy to go high-end or high street but so far Gap, Topshop, Zara, Paige and J Brand have failed to deliver.

Any recommendations? I'd rather spend a bit more for a pair that last and don't loose their shape or fade too quickly although if I find a great cheap pair I'll just buy multiples and rotate. I tend to stick to skinny mid-rise styles and I'm after classic dark blue or black to wear with boots through winter. I'm a size 10 and 5ft 5in, and while there's always room for improvement I don't have any particular problem areas although the perfect jeans would of course make my bum look much smaller than it is.

I admit I was disappointed by J Brand as so many people on here are fans but the 5 pairs I tried on did nothing for me. I admit that I was a bit overwhelmed by all the choice (was in Harvey Nichols jeans dept) and could have done with one of those genius shop assistants I often read about who have hours of patience bringing you a never ending stream of styles to try on until you find the perfect pair but unfortunately I'm yet to find one.

Help!

I have just bought 2 pairs if salsa jeans after trying for what seems like forever to find the right jeans. I can honestly say they are the best fitting and most comfortable jeans I have ever had!

To the extent I may throw the 20 other pairs of jeans I own away!!!

Bellebelle · 14/08/2012 14:16

Fiveisenough just googled them, are they the ones which Very and House of Fraser sell online? Which style did you get?

Try on different brands. I swear by 7FAM (straight, boot cut, flared) and MiH (skinnies). Both are cut exactly for my body type - many others are not!

Fiveisenough · 14/08/2012 15:31

I got the secret skinny ones in dark rinse and a lighter blue.
They are the house of Fraser ones but you can also buy direct from salsa they ship to the uk and there is more choice on their site.
Before thaws I liked American eagle as l they are really soft but not as flattering.

I think I also like them as the rise is a bit higher. I am a 12 but low rise tend to cut into my hips giving me the muffin top effect or I am forever pulling them up.

WillPenn · 14/08/2012 15:38

Was going to recommend Paige but see they are on your been there done that list. Have you tried their Hidden Hills style? It has two buttons on the waist and is slightly higher. It comes in straight leg/skinny/bootcut. They are brilliant (especially if you can get them on work trips to the US for £70!)

CrunchyFrog · 14/08/2012 18:00

I recently got the lift and shape ones from Next, skinny ones, they're very flattering, I nearly look like I have an arse in them. Most jeans are too big on arse and thighs if they fit round the waist.

faustina · 14/08/2012 18:27

there are some dark blue skinny MIH jeans on tkmaxx at the moment for 39.99 - might be worth a try? I find their fit is really good, but it's such an individual thing

My favourites are currently Goldsigns, really £££ but a great fit and super comfy. I also really like J Brand 910s and 811s, did you try those?

NotMostPeople · 14/08/2012 19:10

Well I'm going to go for the bottom end of the market and suggest Primark skinny jeans at a whopping £7 a pair! Not the super skinny though and I've found the coloured jeans don't fit so well either.

getawiggleon · 14/08/2012 22:40

I highly recommend Level 99 jeans from Anthropologie.

AlfalfaMum · 15/08/2012 00:21

I find it hard to find jeans that are just right. I tried on 12 bloody pairs in Gap and none of them were right, Gap jeans used to be my old faithful.

My favourite two pairs are from Miss Tortue, a French company that only sell via clothing parties a la Tupperware. They are a perfect fit, don't dig in or pinch anywhere, and actually make me look taller and slimmer.
The problem is, my friend that was hosting them can't be arsed anymore so I'll have to host myself if I what any more of the jeans! Meh.

I've been meaning to try Salsa jeans, I've heard they're magic.

ListenCuntoMe · 15/08/2012 01:56

7 For All Mankind do it for me - after many years & much research I have to say they're the best for me, suit my body-shape perfectly - beautiful denim - straight, boot or flare.

Skinnies would go MiH.

Just both seem to fit my body.

(Tallish, Slim, long-legged but apple shaped size 8/10 with a proportionately large, curvy arse).

SleepyFergus · 15/08/2012 06:15

What is MiH? Sorry if being particularly thick, but can't work out what it stands for!

bawabod · 15/08/2012 09:47

I border on a body shape of straight to apple landed up going into a one off shop in guildford that stock a wide range of Levis the old style never fitted me much to my dismay, but they have bought out a newish range to cater for the slight curve the bold curve and the demi curve figure. and they even have a handheld chart that you twist round as you answer questions regarding your shape before you try on the most suitable style. In my forties and finally have the best pair of jeans and believe you me I have a pair of paige jeans James jeans and 7 for all mankind in my wardrobe The new levis are worth a try and what a classic item . So shallow but i love having the little red tag on my butt !!!

sweetheart · 15/08/2012 10:15

Could you let me know where the shop in Guildford is please?

bawabod · 15/08/2012 10:23

Sorry sweetheart I should have said in the first place. It is Moffats at the top end of the high street next to the post office. Happy shopping

Queenmarigold · 15/08/2012 10:43

Next boyfriend cut for me. But I'm huge. Sad

Bellebelle · 16/08/2012 20:07

Thanks all for your replies, sorry for disappearing.

About to go to Selfridges to try on lots of your suggestions - will report back.

Babs Thanks for your kind words but honestly nothing was working, I was looking in the mirror thinking "I don't look like that!" and as soon as I was back in my own clothes looked ten times better.

I also just bought 2 pairs of Salsa. Dark rinse secret skinny and black slim leg. I was lucky to get a fabulous shop assistant who suggested them and they fit me better than any jeans I have ever had. Also think the higher rise helps, I have a small waist and hollow back so normally they gape there, these are lovely and snug.

madmomma · 16/08/2012 22:20

I've just got superskinnies from Isabella Oliver and I look taller and slimmer in them. Really comfy too. Would recommend.

AlfalfaMum · 17/08/2012 00:30

Madmomma, what's the sizing like? I'm tempted by the IO jeans but wary to order online in case they don't fit (I have to pay a lot of postage).

madmomma · 17/08/2012 11:07

I'll just grab mine and have a look - I can't remember.

madmomma · 17/08/2012 11:13

Ok I'm an apple shaped size 14 with skinny legs. I bought a 31r in the IO superskinnies and they are perfect. That's the size I would expect to be IYSWIM, so I'd say they come up just right. At first they were too tight and I very nearly sent them back. Dd1 stopped me and I'm very glad she did. They 'gave' and are now fabulous. They hug every curve and look sprayed on, whilst having enough stretch to be mega comfy and somehow make me look slimmer and firmer than I am. The IO site should have a few reviews of them by now.

AlfalfaMum · 17/08/2012 12:52

Thanks that helps. I was thinking of 31R too, but my legs aren't really skinny so I don't think I can get away with sprayed on.
