What do I wear to a wedding?

Yes it sounds a strange question but I've not attended a wedding since I was 9, so I'm a bit unsure.

The ceremony is in a church, and the reception is a couple of hours later at a nice local restaurant.

I've got possibly 3 nice dresses, one plum, mid-calf length long sleeved affair, one navy blue, just below the knee with thick straps and a red one that's knee length, has one thick strap and then a spaghetti strap.

Have various shoes and shawl type things to go with all those.

Am I even on the right track? And do I need a hat? Or, what are these "fascinators" I've heard of??

The groom is a friend of mine and my boyfriend's, but I've never met anyone else, my boyfriend has, so I don't want to look out of place.

They sound fine, you could start a thread in the Style and Beauty topic where you can post pictures. Generally I would say hats optional, most the weddings I've been to lately tends to be only the older female relatives that have full hats. Fascinators are just fancy clips/hair bands. Like these. Would say very much optional, no one would look askance one way or the other Smile

See my thread in relationships entitled "would you go to a wedding when you don't know anyone". I'm goin to one tomorrow where I too don't know anyone. The groom is my boyfriends friend from across the country so never met him. There's some good suggestions of outfits on there and a link to the one I've settled on. It's above the knee, capped sleeves with some necklace-like detail. I have a fascinator, nude court shoes and a blazer for the church.

Right, sorry for not getting back, thank you both for your answers :)

I've got pictures of 2 possible dresses, that I've worn to other quite formal occasions.

Worn to a formal uni evening

and this one:

as seen with my graduation robe That one is basically a plain blue dress with quite thick shoulders, I've got a little shrug type thing on with it there, under my robe.

I've got a nice red one as well, will get a picture of that later.

I've seen some nice fascinators, but I'm really not sure. I might go for one of the flower hair clip things though, because I've got short hair that I can't really do anything with style-wise.

I like the first dress but it doesn't really look formal enough - can't make the second out at all.

this sort of style would be amazing on your lovely curves. THey do some fab prints if you could hack that.

LollipopViolet · 12/08/2012 11:18

Yes, that's what I thought, it's lovely for meals out, but it's not very wedding-y.

I'll take a better picture of the blue one when I take one of my red dress.

That dress is lovely - do you know any high street chains that sell something similar? In the sales would be fab as I'm skint hence searching my wardrobe!

And thank you, my curves will hopefully be a bit smaller by September as I'm about 4 stone overweight according to the BMI thing Blush

Overweight or not, you have a great figure!

Not aware of such things on the highstreet and certainly not for comparable prices, Lady V have quite a few for 30 quid ish.

LollipopViolet · 12/08/2012 12:39

Right, I have pictures of the other 2 dresses:

Little Red Dress

the blue dress I wore at graduation

Of the 3, I've now got a favourite, and family opinion is that my favourite is suitable, but I'm curious to know people's opinions :)

red dress - others are a bit dark.

ProcrastinationAteMyMorning · 12/08/2012 12:46

Red!

screamingskull · 12/08/2012 12:49

red dress is nice

LollipopViolet · 12/08/2012 12:57

Yep, you've all said the same as me! The other 2 do feel a bit too dark.

I've got some nice shoes, just need a little something for my hair now, I think :)

maybe?

LollipopViolet · 12/08/2012 16:56

Oooh, I quite like that.

I was looking at some of those clips with a nice big flower on, which could be good. Love my short, easy to manage hair, but just wish at times like this I could do something with it.
