I got a nice denim chain handle bag from Dotty P's a few year ago. It was when chanel bags were very prominent. I would suggest maybe checking out Lk Bennett (they have an outlet in York's McArthur Glen), Nine West and Radley outlets.

R&B have lovely ones, but they are a couple of hundred.

What's your budget? Do you mind pre-loved? Because I'm thinking a Mulberry Brooke... They were about a few years ago now but they come up in eBay fairly often and you can puck one up for under £200. I have one and it's lovely, great size for daytime essentials or for evening. You can detach the strap too and add a longer one to wear it messenger style, or go entirely strapless and use it as a clutch. See, that kind of versatility saves you money

I got one from Stella & dot which can be worn three ways, I have the brown one but it comes in black too.

dizzy I like the Brooke it looks very chic. I was really disapointed that when I visited the Mulberry outlet in York they didn't have the older styles. They had a Roxy.
