Should I cut my hair?

I have mostly had long hair all my life but now am in my late thirties and I think I probably need to chop it...

Anyway at the moment it looks very similar to <a class="break-all" href="http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?imgurl=media4.onsugar.com/files/2011/12/49/2/1855/18550011/63481505e0c212bf_Long_Blonde_Hairstyles_A.jpg&imgrefurl=thelonghairstyles.onsugar.com/Long-Blonde-Hairstyles-20748982&usg=__Syo4rnBolmQTBaXCEMC42a5oVfY=&h=635&w=425&sz=29&hl=en&start=12&zoom=1&tbnid=G_jKz-9frr2R1M:&tbnh=137&tbnw=92&ei=o7AJUJjTHuml0QXO49TGCg&prev=/search%3Fq%3Dlong%2Bblonde%2Bhairstyles%26hl%3Den%26sa%3DN%26gl%3Duk%26tbm%3Disch&itbs=1" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">this (same colour, length and wave)

How short are you thinking? That long hair is lovely! I either like really short hair or really long hair- I always found that mid-length (on me) got blah really quickly.

secretlyahippy · 20/07/2012 20:41

Unfortunately I look nothing like the above model except for the hair.

I was going to go for this style

<a class="break-all" href="http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?imgurl=bagsview.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/03/medium-length-hair-styles-2012-latest-fashion-trends.jpeg&imgrefurl=bagsview.com/2012/03/21/african-american-updos/cool-african-american-braided-updos-2012-haircut-pictures-1/&usg=__j_kfo340i31v_UAPZTX-DQjRSVE=&h=430&w=345&sz=25&hl=en&start=260&zoom=1&tbnid=fkZEFHt-74evqM:&tbnh=126&tbnw=101&ei=lbMJULnWD4GT0QXpzaTcCg&prev=/search%3Fq%3Dmedium%2Bblonde%2Bhairstyles%26start%3D240%26hl%3Den%26sa%3DN%26gl%3Duk%26tbm%3Disch&itbs=1" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">here

Will I cry that all my old hair is gone? Will I make a mistake or do I need to pull myself together as long blonde hair is for twenty somethings and not a woman who is rapidly approaching fourty....

OP posts:
MarshaBrady · 20/07/2012 20:42

I wouldn't go that short. It's lovely hair.

secretlyahippy · 20/07/2012 20:43

Also - I'm finding that running around after my 3 little dc - my hair is usually in a ponytail.

OP posts:
dexter73 · 20/07/2012 20:43

Keep it long.

secretlyahippy · 20/07/2012 20:49

Really? People often say my hair is nice but how long realisticallty can I keep it that long for? Fine when I was 23 and had breasts like that model, but middle age doesn't carry that look well....

OP posts:
solidgoldbrass · 20/07/2012 20:54

Well, I cut my hair off when I was (thinks, counts on fingers) 37. And when I was 40 and DS was a weaning baby I shaved my head. Now I am 47 and my hair is halfway down my back again, and I am considering maybe chopping it all off and selling it.
It's your hair OP. Hair grows again if you cut it. But only cut it if you want to, never mind all that bullshit about what you 'should' do at any age.

dexter73 · 20/07/2012 20:58

I don't think breasts have much to do with hair length! You can keep it that long for as long as you want.

Susieloo · 20/07/2012 21:05

Keep it long, I've had long blonde hair since my twenties and every now and again I cut it because I'm bored, the last time I had a fringe put in, guaranteed within two weeks I'm growing it out again, I'm 36 now and although I do put it up a lot I try and vary the style and when I can be arsed to dry it properly I do love it, I also haven't got the patience for a proper cut that needs washing and straightening and doing.

MarshaBrady · 20/07/2012 21:06

Try a bit shorter next time. I think you will regret cutting all of it off like that style.

See how you feel with just below collar bone or something.

HaveAGoodDay · 20/07/2012 21:48

If i had your hair, i'd keep it long. My hair was about the same length, if not longer about 6 years ago. Then in 2008 i had it cut to just up to my shoulders. I didn't like it and decided i'd grow it long again but because i like to colour it, over the last few years, its condition has suffered so i've had to have it trimmed, well we talking inches off every 3, 4 months. Now it seems it grow much further than my shoulders. I when i see old photos of myself with my long hair i kick myself for getting it cut in the first place! Age has nowt to do with it.

Mbear · 20/07/2012 21:55

Cut mine off when I was 32!! Decided I didnt need the security blanket of long hair!! Go shoulder length first, that'll give you the confidence to go shorter then start playing with styles!

Never regretted it.

COCKadoodledooo · 20/07/2012 21:57

I had my long (well below bra strap length) hair lopped into a pixie crop a couple of years back. I loved it and didn't regret it at all. My hairdresser asked me if I was sure more times than Dignitas would have, bless her, but I really was.

Unfortunately we were/are skint so I couldn't keep up with the regular salon trips to keep it that length. Even more unfortunately as it began to grow I realised quite how exactly the same 30years early like my mother it made me look. It's around my shoulders again now. Am 36 and will be keeping it this way.

Shoshe · 20/07/2012 22:00

Im in my early fifties and growing my hair long for the first time since a young child. go against the norm, you dont have to have it short because your older, mine certainly looks better longer.

(mind you it was Sinaed O'connor short for a long time)

SoldeInvierno · 20/07/2012 22:01

Don't do it. I used to have hair like that and cut it in my early 30s because I thought it would look more professional. Then I spent a decade trying to grow it again, and cutting it, and trying again.... Now, finally at 42, it is long again and I love it.

cerealqueen · 22/07/2012 23:58

I'd had long hair a long time, usually wore it up as never had time to do anything with it. Decided to go for a chop to chin lengthy hair which is cut so well I just wash and leave it, I love it, feel and look younger as it was dragging my face down.
Try one of those websites where you can try different hair on a picture of you or try some wigs on??

NoComet · 23/07/2012 01:05

Personally I find my hair is just work if it's short. It wants washing every day, it sticks out, it looks messy unless I blow dry it, put gell on it etc. basically it becomes an attention seeking toddler.

If it's just below my shoulders I don't have to do anything with it, except get it trimed when it gets 4 inches below my shoulders and starts to split.

DD1 has proper long hair, it doesn't splitEnvy
