What to wear on a first date?

CandyCrate · 20/07/2012 08:08

I have next week with someone from PoF, I have never been on an online date before, and I haven't been on a date in years! In fact, I don't think I have ever been on a 'date' as such.

I am 25, DS is 2, before he came along I just kind of met people and ended up with them, so I have never had this dilemma before! The date is in a pub just for a drink or two to see if we like eachother in real life.

What do I wear?? I thought any kind of dress with bare legs would look to dressy/slutty for a first date. And I don't wanna wear tights coz it might be really warm and sunny and I would feel stupid. I don't do leggings! That said, all my skinny jeans I have a problem with (one has bleach stain near crotch! one waay to tight like spray on and one kinda baggy around knees). I get paid tomorrow so I have a very small (like £30) fund if I need something new, but if we don't get on it will have been a waste to spend money on a new outfit. Help me!

Jeez I missed out a few words there, hope it makes sense!

I'd say skinnies and simple floaty longsleeved top with nice accessories, high heels and good hair and makeup. But obvs the important thing is that you feel good. Do you usually wear dresses? If so, I wouldn't say bare legs says slut IMO, if te dress is classy. You might feel overdressed if it's a pub though. So many variables! What kind of shape are you?

midori1999 · 20/07/2012 08:27

I'm no expert, but I'd go for jeans and a nice top. If you have a top you could wear could you get a pair of cheaper jeans (in the sales maybe) or I find New Look jeans are Ok for the money and at least you'd wear jeans again.

Have fun and I hope it goes well.

CandyCrate · 20/07/2012 08:32

I'm a size 12, 5'11.

I don't do heels as I am too tall already. I have these lovely sparkly gold pumps I just bought (they are nicer than they sound!).

My only problem with jeans is my little belly gets pushed over the top of the waistband and its hard to find a top to hide it! Thats why I was thinking dress. But if i wear tights I can't wear pumps and will need to wear boots instead. And its meant to be sunny! Oh god its so stressful!

Last few first dates I have been on I have worn dress with bare legs, but with flats or low-ish heels. Dresses haven't been too short, or too dressy- more of a summer dress. I have worn a denim or leather jacket with it, or a blazer once.

I never feel dressed up enough in jeans, and if they have marks, etc on, you're not going to feel your best in them.

I'm 27, size 10, pear shaped, and would wear something like this with my leather biker and black flat sandals, if that helps.

cupcake78 · 20/07/2012 08:39

Maxi dress? Your lovely and tall and slim, covers legs, feminine and there are loads about at reasonable price. Pumps would be fine with it.

Or yes to jeans and nice top, summer dress that you feel comfortable in.

You need to feel good in what your wearing. Good luck!

BreakOutTheKaraoke · 20/07/2012 08:40

5" 11 is not too tall, I would love to be that height and a size 12 with it- bet you look fab in skinnies and a vest! What sort of shape are you? That dress I linked too might be a bit short since your legs will be much longer than mine, you lucky thing!

CandyCrate · 20/07/2012 08:44

Hehe thanks. I like my legs (once they have been fake tanned and shaved!) but its just that little bit of belly that I hate! I'll be sitting down mostly so I know if I have jeans and a top I will have a lovely roll of belly fat visible at all times. So I am thinking dress is a good idea. I have this dress Here (i iron mine though Hmm) but I think coz i have fairly big boobs (34E) it looks slutty on me!

So if you're not going to feel comfortable with your boobs out, do you have anything a bit higher cut?

BreakOutTheKaraoke · 20/07/2012 09:09

If you like pretty dresses, this is quite nice in the sale, or I think this one is quite a classic.

CandyCrate · 20/07/2012 10:14

Both nice dresses BreakOutTheKareoke and I swear I'm not being awkward, but the orange one has cups sewn into the top and my boobs will be too big for them and look stupid. And I don't wear black :(

I don't have many clothes tbh, I recently completely changed my style from slightly gothy emo crap to grown up pinky/cream/brown things.

I also have a rather large frontage Grin

You can't hide your boobs, neither should you. I can see how the short dress and big boobs may not give the right impression.

I think the boobs or legs not both is a valid argument for a first date.

BreakOutTheKaraoke · 20/07/2012 11:25

I thought since it was Kelly Brook, it may be made for bigger boobs- as I'm on the tiny side myself, I have the problem of filling them myself! Grin

I agree boobs or legs, definitely. So, if you have more grown up things, do you have any thing you like? A pretty top you feel comfortable in?

CandyCrate · 20/07/2012 19:37

I bought a dress today! Lol it might not be what Im going to wear though...

Its a leopard print (I know...) dress, but its got a high neck and its almost knee length. Its like skater dress shape, or fit and flare whatever they call it.

So I can wear brown tights and brown boots and get away with it i think. As long as my hair is casual I think I'll look casual but hot still :)

boots kina like this but shorter.

dress like this but leopard print.

what do you reckon? i hate black tights and i dont think they go well with brown boots. i dont have black shoes/boots and my only bare leg footwear option is gold glittery pumps, which i fear would be too much..

How do you feel about a 50's style sundress? Just above knee length so not too short, nips in at the waist so might hold in the mum-tum (I've got the same issue, btw). Maybe with a denim jacket so it doesn't look too too, if you see what I mean?

Other than that, I second the maxi dress idea.

Saying all this, I would probably chicken out and fall back on my skinnies with a longish tunic top!

natcat7000 · 20/07/2012 20:14

Oops! Didn't read to the end before posting and I see you've got something - looks really good :)

CandyCrate · 20/07/2012 20:17

Thanks :)

I have a 50's style dress, but its very fifties, and may look a little try-hard?

I love the dress, love the shape and loove leopard print. But ime men - well my DH anyway - see animal print as tarty where women know it's stylish and fashionable. So a thumbs up to the dress but IMO not for the date. I think head to Dorothy P and get some cheapo skinnies and a floaty top, wear your sparkly flats and maybe a fancy necklace if you have one?

CandyCrate · 20/07/2012 20:21

:( I know exactly what you mean about leopard print. i know its super stylish and lovely but it might come across as tarty. Oh no! but its a lovely dress! t'was only £9 in the sale though so no real loss!

damn, back to square one!

Personally when I next go on a date (hopefully still at age 47!) I will be wearing smart jeans and a fun top. It's casual but you can show off personality with jewellery.

I like the dress! But why not it wear it barelegs and pumps? Who wants boots in July!

Do have fun!

natcat7000 · 20/07/2012 20:33

I'd agree about blokes reading leopard print the wrong way but the dress has both a high neckline and is knee length so how much more clear does CandyCrate need to be? Men can be massively a tiny bit thick about these sorts of things though.

One thing I might do since it's knee length, and since you mentioned liking your legs, is get going on the fake tan now and go bare legged with the boots.

BreakOutTheKaraoke · 20/07/2012 20:37

Wear the dress, it's lovely! Probably tone nicely with the pumps and bare legs, it will casual it up a bit. Do you have a nice belt with it, hair loose and wavy with it maybe? Get fake tanning!

Frontline · 20/07/2012 20:45

Legs are slutty? Wtf?

HepHep · 20/07/2012 22:05

I would personally go with staple of jeans and a nice top that shows a tiny bit of boob and some nice jewellery and natural hair and makeup. OR maxi dress, cardi and sandals/shoes. Both would be relaxed yet pretty enough for a first date.

Frontline · 20/07/2012 22:08

AREGHH STOP WITH THE "nice top" shit.
No you'd wear a crap top. hmm
