Need ideas for a 50s themed party on Saturday - help!

I'm going to a hen do on Saturday and missed the bit in the invite about having to go in 50s theme. What can I wear that won't mean expensive shopping but won't make me look like I've made no effort? All I can think of are those prom-type dresses that were in fashion recently but I have a massive arse and will not look pleasing.

My dear, a massive arse is positively designed for a 50s frock. What d'you think all that skirt fabric is for?!

If you go on eBay, you can also pick up lots of circle skirts, and cheap tulle net underskirts. If you get one in a pretty colour - or perhaps in polka dots? - all you need is a black sweater or cardigan (fairly short and fitted) and a belt over the top, and you're good to go.

So I've bought a polka dot circle skirt from eBay based entirely on your advice. You never know, maybe this will be the start of a whole new me! Or I may kill the Mad Men trend stone dead with my giant polka-dotted arse and ruin it for everyone Smile

I think it will look gorgeous Smile I am also the owner of a massive arse and 50's dresses are my best friend!

Red lipstick, black eyeliner on lid, pale matt base. Done.

Hair down and curly or up in a quiff at front or if you're feeling adventurous you could go on YouTube and follow a tutorial on how to do simple pin rolls in your hair.
Add a little scarf tied round your neck or hair and you're well away. Have fun!

Oh hurrah, I'm really glad :)

Have you got some accessories etc.? Tiny's suggestions are spot on...

Ginismyfriend · 13/07/2012 12:31

The skirt has arrived! I have a matching scarf too. I look considerably less horrifying than I'd expected and am actually looking forward to going now, so thank you all for the advice.

You'll look fab! As Jodie says the entire 50's look is fabuloso for curves!

Stick some pics up please Grin

Minor Pedant Alert Mad Men is set in the 60's.

You see, this is why it was important I asked for advice Smile
