Hair dye advice, unusual request: any colourists out there?

I am growing out my hair colour. My natural colour is salt and pepper and absolutely white at the front. I am happy with this and have about 2.5 inches of roots. The problem is that the ends are too light, lighter than the "pepper" component of my salt and pepper. The result of over processing, ill - advised high lights then colouring over them. I have cut my hair as short as I can bear, in a short bob, but cannot contemplate going any shorter.
What I want: the ends darker.
What I don't want: to undo my good work and colour my salt and pepper / white bits.
So, is there such a thing as a dye that will "take" on the ends but not on the white? I suspect that my whites are fairly resistant to colour, and if they did take it would wash out fairly fast. But I really don't want them to get stained or go dark.
I suppose the alternative is to attempt to colour just the ends and keep the product off the roots, which I know will be fiddly.
