Can you help me find a summer dress for dd please?

She's 12 soon. The issue is with her being 5 feet 7 and between a size 12/14, there are limits on what's available and appropriate for a young girl.

She's got a bit of a tummy and is very broad backed, so it's hard for her when she sees girls in strappy, mini dresses because they just don't suit her.

Has anyone seen a dress they think would be appropriate? Suitable for a party or special occasion. Budget - I don't care as long as it fits and looks good! less than £60 Smile

Would something along the lines of this be OK, or too short?

CeliaFate · 29/06/2012 17:26

I like that, it is a bit short though, I'll check and see if they have a tall range. Bless her, she ends up wearing a tunic and leggings all the time, I'd like her to have a party dress dammit!

Thanks UML, I like that. Which means it's probably not for dd! Grin.

ha ha, yes, you are right... I am not thaat old, but I think 12 year olds are much more fashion conscious these days!

UML · 29/06/2012 17:29

Its the sleeves that made me feel that a 'younger' person could wear it...

CeliaFate · 29/06/2012 17:31

UML - I think it's a lovely dress, she could wear to a family wedding but not a friend's party. Some of her peers wear ...interesting clothing - think of a vest top with sparkles and that's their dress!
I don't want dd to be the frumpy one on the end iyswim.

There are some nice summer dresses in the Joules summer sale.

This is the one I initially thought of when I read your post, but there are some nice spotty and flowery ones too.

ProcrastinationAteMyMorning · 29/06/2012 17:34

this comes in tall the yellow is great (for a child)

ProcrastinationAteMyMorning · 29/06/2012 17:36

maybe?

Francagoestohollywood · 29/06/2012 17:38

Quick, go on www.smallable.com, there is a teenage section and they have sales on. It is one of my fav websites.

dlady · 29/06/2012 17:39

How about this one. www.ebay.co.uk/itm/WOMENS-LADIES-MAXI-COIL-LONG-MAXI-DRESS-ALL-COLOURS-/220918343281?pt=UK_Women_s_Dresses&var=&hash=item336fc26671#ht_2084wt_1059 I am a size 16 (doing ww so hoping to be 14) and tried a similar one on in Primark. Trouble was it a few sizes too small and on the wrong hanger, but I could see that in the right size it would be flattering.

mysteryfairy · 29/06/2012 17:50

It must be so hard to shop for her. How about the tall range from top shop then at least things will be in proportion and not indecently short:

top shop tall dresses here

Or maybe new look?
new look tall

I quite like this playsuit and its quite all covering. I could imagine DD (age 10) wearing something like it. They do it in a 14 but not really sure if it would be flattering - depends on her body shape

ooh - actually there is a good selection on Johnnie Boden too. Just read the measurements for xl and whilst I'm not sure what they equate to they are definitely bigger than a 10. They are for 10-16 year olds and there are a couple of things which are not totally skimpy. She might like this range as, whilst I know Boden is not for everyone, you can see from the models etc it is marketed at her age group.

If dresses come up a bit short this selection really looks like they would lend themselves to a pair of cropped leggings underneath and that would also look age appropriate

Thanks everyone, there are great suggestions here. Will go through them with dd shortly. Smile

Its called 'Shimmer Sequin Shift Dress' - or just extract the link from above

mysteryfairy · 29/06/2012 20:22

Celia - let us know what she chooses. It's such a difficult age to shop for, even without the height challenge!
