How often do you/should you dye your hair?

Ok, so i use to dye mine way too often, like every 3 weeks or so, but that was before i found a colour that i really liked. So about 6 months ago i finally settled on a colour i loved and now i seem to be colouring my hair around every 5, maybe 6 weeks. The root regrowth aren't too noticeable so i could probably go a bit longer between applications.

The colour i use is permanent, however, it does still seem to wash up a little, so thats why i feel the need to brighten it up when i do my roots. I apply the dye to my roots first, leave it on for 20 mins then run the remaining mixture through the lengths and leave that on for the further 10 minutes. I'm just wondering if colouring my hair every 6 weeks is too often with a permanent colour? I have searched and searched but there is nothing that comes anywhere near the shade in a semi-permanent colour. My hair isn't in the best of conditions, and its thinned a lot because of medication. It looks knackered if i don't style it - but i'm holding off on the straighteners and using my hair masks etc.

I probably do mine every 6-8 weeks - it depends how long I can put up with the grey roots coming through!

I do mine once a month, and the condition of it is fine (despite going from naturally mousey to light blonde), is it maybe that the brand doesn't suit you? I used to dye it around every 8 weeks and had stripes where it looked like I'd used a different colour, I asked my hairdresser and she said the heat from your head means the roots automatically 'take' the colour better so if roots are too long there will be a part that doesn't take a well.

I use a box of Garnier Nutrisse hair dye monthly, I wash my hair twice a week (doesn't need doing more than this) use VO5 miracle concentrate after each wash, and a deep conditioner once a month halfway between hair dyes. Oh, and straighten it after most washes as my hair is wavy and I prefer it straight.

I go to hairdressers every 6 weeks and they do exactly as you do ie on roots for longer then massage through rest of hair. I am 90% grey though (and only 36!).
I think it also depends on the colour. When I was red I really had to go every 4-5 weeks. I'd probably get away with 7-8 weeks now I am closer to my natural colour.

What colour do you use?

Blackcats....I use loreal feria mango 74 intense copper. I'm a natural redhead. Use to be like Karen gillian's colour when younger. Now, 20+ years later and having coloured it every colour under the sun, and now wanting to return to my natural colour, when my roots come through they just look more like a flat brown! Feria mango is the only shade that comes close to a natural looking ginger auburn.
