What to pack / wear for Vegas?

Less than three weeks until I go to Vegas for my 40th, hooray! Just saw another thread about packing for Sri Lanka and thought, blimey, what should I be taking with me? Just hot weather stuff or some smart evening stuff too? Do people dress up or should I just buy a velour tracksuit?! Any advice gratefully received!

I've been to Vegas about 6 times.
Outside, it will be up to 40 C - dry desert heat. Inside, it will be freezing cold.
So pool clothes, bikinis, shorts, flipflops for outdoors - dresses, shawls, cardigans, blazers for indoors. Most of your time will be spent indoors.

Anything goes. Most Americans dress very informally. I once wore a full-length evening gown for a formal wedding there - felt out of the place, wear cocktail length. In the better casinos and better restaurants you saw some smartly dressed people but overall the look is casual. Wear something really kitschy if you can.

Vegas is a top-notch shopping location. If you don't gamble, its nasically malls, malls, malls. Any luxury items you can buy right there. They have all normal American high street shops too.

You will walk a lot - take comfy shoes.

Don't miss The Venetian Grin. If you can do it, the helicopter ride to Grand Canyon is lovely. Expensive but unforgettable.

where are you staying?

i find people don't get as dressed up as i would have liked! i was thinking james bond and it was more fat american chav in some casinos!

i stayed in wynn last time and that was more dressy in the evenings as it a bit posh and everyone seems to be loaded.

if you are going to nice restaurants you will be able to get dressed up to the nines as there are some very nice places.

if you are going to nightclubs you will need to wear dresses, i don't think jeans are allowed.

it will be bloody roasting in three weeks so you will probably spend most of your time inside in the air con. i was in my wedding dress at the vegas sign and thought i might die! got some good pics though so it was worth it. my dh was wearing shoes from a hire place with his wedding suit and they started to melt a bit!

i have been in july twice and found it too hot to sunbathe so don't take too many bikinis.

you mainly want shorts/cropped trousers and tshirt/vests for during the day. take comfy shoes for walking around.

it's definatley not like james bond in the casinos though. jeans and top would be fine for gambling and wandering around.

i have been three time and love it - i got married there three years ago!

Fat fingers !

rookiemater · 29/06/2012 13:00

Yes I remember Vegas being freezing inside, definitely something to keep you warm in the casinos.

Ultrasonic · 29/06/2012 21:06

A couple of small cardis/shrugs for indoors at night (prob you won't need them daytime as you'll be grateful for the cool)

And heel balm, the desert dry heat can crack your heels right open to bleeding wounds

And that's it. Leave the rest of your case empty so you can shop til you drop baby! Grin

Ultrasonic · 29/06/2012 21:07

Oh and mandarin oriental.....stunning

I got married in Vegas in June 2007 at the Mandalay Bay. It is freaking hot! Echo what everyone else says about being casual. Maxi dresses, denim shorts and vests maybe 1 nice dress if you fancy being posh for a night. Wear flats you will do lots of walking. Defo recommend doing down town vegas (has a light show on the ceiling) one night-very cheap cocktails and the minimum bet on black jack and roulette tables is way less than the casinos on the strip so it's a good way to have a gamble but without losing a fortune.
