boy's school shoes for DD? Would that be odd?

first - I did not grow up in the UK - so no first hand experience with the school system and uniforms etc.

my DD is due to start school in sep (YR) and she is a real tom boy. I looked at the girl's school shoes and they seem, well, very girly and by far not as robust as the boys' shoes who would be much more suitable to DD's activity level (I know she will spent the breaks on the playground on the bikes which tend to ruin the shoes, kicking the ball, finding every puddle that is). she usually wears very unisex shoes - never ever the pink girly glittery shoes. also, she wears insoles and needs something supportive.

So basically I wondered if it would be really odd if I get her some boys shoes? Do other mums do this or would DD really stand out as a bit odd shoe-wise?

Alternatively, anybody any tips for getting some more robust girl?s school shoes?

I think it would be ok if she prefers the boys ranges, clarks had some earlier in the year in the girls range which were very like boys shoes, I noticed they were quite popular at school, so she can't be the only one who wants something more robust.

Take her and let her choose which ones she would like?

Actually ones like these are quite hard wearing for kicking balls, bikes etc.

tiredteddy, oh yes, will take her along but she is usually not fuzzed ;-)

I think the first link is perfect porthcurnick, we need to avoid open shoes as she loves puddle hopping and would get wet socks in the second pair :)

My dd (yr 1) wears boys' school shoes. She has black leather type trainer things with velcro. I think they may be from Next. She used to wear girls' shoes but they were useless for running around and when it rained her feet would get soaked from the puddles. She does sometimes wear girls' ones if she is wearing a dress but generally she is in trousers. She's not the only one in her class either so it's not a particularly odd thing to do.

Op my dd has had several pairs of boys shoes, I often get kids shoes from Tkmaxx so we get to just choose a pair we both like rather than having to get them from the 'girls' section where all is pink and sparkly.

But would also agree that Kickers are fab and will be my shoe of choice once either of mine can do laces.

Both my DDs wear boys shoes at the moment. Far more robust and playground proof then girls styles.

Gobbler - I read it as "knickers" too . I remember having a big row with my mum in the shoe shop as a child because I wanted some brown sandals for school which she insisted were boys' shoes (this was the 1970s when boys wore sandals to school in summer, you don't see it anymore do you??). Anyway, I won and got the shoes, but there were several boys at school with the same pair. Never bothered me and no-one ever commented on it (except my mum!!)

My DD (7) is also a tomboy and refuses to wear anything girly - no dresses, skirts, etc. She wears boys shorts and shoes for school and thinks she is quite cool!

dd is 10 not girly. Have always gone straight for boots for the whole autumn/winter term. She has flat feet and can't wear the girly shoes anyhow. Those first ones linked to are brilliant, iwish they had done those a few yrs ago when dd could fit those sizes. We had and have so little choice, no robust shoes for girls whatsoever. Certainly nothing supportive from Clarks, carzy.
Yet i may go for boys ones this autumn, as when spring comes she is boling on any hot days in the boots.
Her girl classmate wears the boys ones, the ones with velcro that look a bit like trainers.

It's likely that some children will ask her why she is wearing boys shoes but if she is not bothered about that then it shouldn't bet to problematic. However boys shoes aren't really anymore hardwearing they are clumpier.

To be honest your probably better getting a unisex shoe that is good quality.

I wouldn't recommend sending her to school in just knickers

My dd (8) has also worn the Clarks boys ones - like trainers with velcro.
We explained that people might ask why she was wearing boys' shoes but she was fine with that and just told them she liked them and they were comfortable.
