Swimming costume for tubby 10-yr-old?

DD is mildly overweight (there are reasons, which we're addressing). One of the few sports she likes is swimming, but now that she's older I'm struggling to find a swimming costume to fit her.

She's 5 ft tall and very much an apple shape -- plump shoulders and big tummy, but slim legs and no real bust or hips yet, so all the small adult sizes we've tried are too baggy round the bum.

Oh, and she struggles with fastenings behind her neck!

Any kind MNers care to rise to the challenge? Have threatened to knit her one, like my gran did for mum in the post-war austerity years...

Have two girls and they tend to grow outward before growing upwards so don't worry. I normally get tankinis which cover but don't stretch tight over tummies. Also don't grow out of them do quickly!! Usually get marks and Spencer's ones to be honest as good material, appropriate to age and reasonably priced.

You would be best with a teenage tankini.
Will have a look for you now - back in a bit

Something like this in a size 8/10?
depends on the fit and if she is already getting a bust
Really difficult if not seeing it on but i would definitely go for a vest type bottoms combi as it is more flattering

this would be a lovely flattering all in one swimsuit
i want it for my bigger daughter but they have no size 12 only size 14
(She might indeed fit into a 14 but it is difficult to know isn't it?)

The tankinis at tesco look like you need a bit for the cups Sad

good luck x

DD is 9 and has similar body shape, and she has a size 10 slazenger women's costume.
Not one with a fitted bust or anything.

It's a bit more grown up than some of the children's ones but as she is quite serious about her swimming, she is OK with that.

JaneaneGruffalo · 13/06/2012 16:14

Have just reread your post OP where you say she has not real bust yet and she has a small bum Envy so I would take a punt on the spotty size 8 tankini from asda....

MittzbethSalander · 13/06/2012 16:15

(Peacocks have a few in)

or based on what Mittzbeth just said the size 10 slazenger tankini from buy it now ebay (from the photo it does look a bit cuppy but maybe it is a photo of a larger size?)

JaneaneGruffalo · 13/06/2012 16:28

NatashaBee has the right idea with separates.
My DD has just come downstairs and dissed all my choices as being too grown up. She will grudgingly let me buy her the kelly holmes one to grow into if the inbuilt bra is not too obvious
me: but you need a bra
her: do not
This could run and run. Off for a Brew

Lancelottie · 13/06/2012 16:30

Wow, thanks for all the answers! Unfortunately school won't accept tankinis -- has to be a one-piece for there, but it would be a good solution for home.

Will work through the links now.

mm, the very basic Slazenger looks worth a shot for school if not too bottom-y. Mine squirms at the very mention of the words 'bust' or 'bra', Gruffalo!
