Why is it wrong to wear a bright top with a black skirt?

Thanks to reinny and susanne for saying it years ago I can't find anything to wear. I have on a bright green shell top as black flippy skirt. Gold accessories fab dark green Mani and either gold or tan sandals. I can't stop thinking, am I breaking a rule?

Sounds nice to me.......

IIRC trinny and susannah say you can't wear black with anything other than back as it looks tacky.

I think that includes black trousers as well as skirts.

Actually, I do think it looks a bit naff somtimes wearing a red top with black trousers or whatever, But your outfit sounds fine to me,.

chaosisawayoflife · 09/06/2012 19:30

I think black can make some colours look a bit cheap, but by no means all colours, so if you think it looks good, go for it! It sounds great.

ProcrastinationAteMyMorning · 09/06/2012 19:32

Fuck Trinny & susanne, sounds great.

AmberNectarine · 09/06/2012 19:33

They used to say it made the black look drab and the colour look cheap. I do think there is something in that actually and I try to avoid pairing black with anything other than white or grey.

However, your outfit sounds very nice, so I wouldn't be a slave to 'rules' a if something feels good, it probably looks it.

OddBoots · 09/06/2012 19:37

Rules are made to be broken, dah-ling!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 09/06/2012 19:37

Did you ever SEE some of the things that Trinny and Susannah wore? They are clearly insane. If you like soemthing, wear it. And for what it's worth, the outfit you've described sounds lovely.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 09/06/2012 19:38

Scuse typo-filled post - was stuffing a biscuit down my mouth at the same time as typing. Blush

kaumana · 09/06/2012 19:41

Normally I avoid that combo however I think it could work with a flippy skirt ( bit of movement not so solid IYSWIM) and funky accessories. Go for it.

However, to honestly give an opinion, you should put a pic up Grin

So far the feedback has been good. I need a drink now!

I personally think black bottom with coloured top looks too worky for a night out. Top to toe black better or a patterned bottom. It also springs to mind those awful polyester black bootleg trousers we all used to wear

KurriKurri · 09/06/2012 20:49

Trinny and Susannah usually look like hell. I would do the very opposite of whatever they suggest. I like the sound of your outfit.

SkinnyVanillaLatte · 10/06/2012 09:24

I think what Trinny and Suzannah do to some women is criminal. They take way too many portly women and shove them into overtight shimmery dresses so they look like great overstuffed shiney sausages.

Completely block any advice they've given (and in my opinion, much of Gok Wan's....) and decide whether your particular combo works or not for you.

Personally I think it's down to the details.

futterbingers · 10/06/2012 13:48

If, when you're dressed, you think "yep I look good" then you will walk round with the confidence that you look good all day. If however you think "erm, is this ok or am I breaking the rules" then you will walk round looking, well, not confident. So head up, shoulders back, own your look and feck t&s (who were pretty damn awfully dressed most of the time). I have lots of black trousers and skirts, but I can't wear black near my face as it makes me look like Morticia, so wear whatever colour I like up top. And some colours or shades look do look cheap, but they'd look cheap whatever they're paired with. I like the sound of your outfit.

Ryoko · 10/06/2012 18:18

Would that be the Trinny and Suzannah who week after week on their TV show never failed to wear anything that was even remotely nice?.
