40th party tomorrow night - what to wear? Help!

Going to a friend's 40th tomorrow night. It's at a fairly up-market kind of place, so probably no option than to wear a dress. But which? I have a black sort of bodycon dress (knee length), but would need to wear tights. Or I have a black full-length Monsoon sort of silky dress, which I could wear sandals with, but would need to wear shrug/cardy as bra straps show. Or the third option is a kind of ethnic patterned maxi dress but again would need to cover my shoulders.

Basically, I'd prefer to wear the bodycon dress, but wondering if it would be too wintery? Given the forecast for tomorrow night, I'm not sure it will matter, but don't want to look daft. Any advice or other ideas most appreciated.

Should probably add, I don't get out much so don't have many smart things to wear.

Wear the body-con if that's what you're most comfortable in. Do you have a brightly coloured (or 'colour pop' as they seem to be known ATM) pair of heels or a bag / jewellery that you could brighten it up with?

You'll be fine in the bodycon and tights - going by the rest of the week, it'll probably be chucking it down anyway - and so you'd look daft in sandals and a maxi.

God I hate that phrase, 'pop' - at no point when I get dressed do I ever want to 'pop' :)

Dress and tights fine for this wintery weather

Thanks. I have a lovely bright silk bag which I was planning to use, so thanks for all your advice, it's working well with what I've got!
