Deck shoes? Yay or nay?

I need some summer shoes to wear with cropped jeans for dog walking, school run etc. converse and the like give me cankles and bored of ballet shoes. Really don't know of deck shoes are the beginning of slippery slope into middle age. (42 on Friday!! )
