Have a few events over next few weeks, wanted gelish or the like but everywhere is booked up. Am ok at applying myself but can anyone recommend a good brand of nail varnish and any tips on how to get a glossy/lasting finish? Ta v much.

Mavala and Eddie last really well.

Essie not eddieGrin

cybbo · 29/05/2012 17:13

OPI or Leighton Denny the best IME

Together the longest results, make sure nail completely free from grease, handcream etc beforehand

2 thin coats then top coat is crucial. I often top up top coat if it's starting to look a bit rum, get a couple more days out of it

BadgersRetreat · 29/05/2012 17:32

i like essie too - use a topcoat for a glossy finish

BadgersRetreat · 29/05/2012 17:36

yy re grease - a quick swipe of polish remover before you start de-greases them a treat

bunnybabylon · 29/05/2012 17:37

never really got on with leighton denny and sold all his stuff on ebay Grin

opi by far the best and i love nails inc caviar top and base coat

Essie is also good and now at boots for only £7.50 (whole range)

valiumredhead · 29/05/2012 17:50

Nails Inc or Leighton denny last ages ime.

anniewoo · 29/05/2012 18:11

Which is better-opi or essie?

cazza40 · 29/05/2012 18:59

Essie is can and use Opi as a top coat

anniewoo · 29/05/2012 19:24

What does 'essie is can' mean please?

Lozza70 · 29/05/2012 19:45

I find the Max Factor mini's are really good but it's all in the preparation. Grease free nails as said previously and use a base coat, 2 coats of colour and a top coat.

Thx everso for the replies. Am going to try Essie polishes but it looks like base/top coat is key. Have put 6 different Nails Inc colours on separate nails tonight and within 1 hr only one shade hadn't chipped Sad. Going to get the Nails Inc Caviar tc/bc and go from there. MN is fab!

Recommend Seche Vite for the top coat. It's amazing. Having tried all the brands listed below (and spent a fortune) I found maybelline forever strong to last the longest!!!

Finallygotaroundtoit · 29/05/2012 22:03

Stop talking in s&b code! Grin

I NEED to know what caviar means - is it the varnish or the colour? Where can you get Opi/ Leighton Denny?

The3Bears · 30/05/2012 09:14

Ive just used ESSIE (cute as a button such a nice colour) and Seche vite topcoat and it looks amazing dries really quick too :)

justabigdisco · 30/05/2012 09:23

Caviar is the Nails Inc base and top coat.

I'm a bit of a NV junky - have 40 bottles at last count. Kept in the fridge of course. You need to put some almond oil on first to keep the cuticles soft and you can reapply this at any time. A base coat and a glossy top coat essential - I use Seche Vite which you can get in Boots and which is glossy and a quick dry. I love Nails Inc and China Glass, Leighton Denny doesn't really suit me, OPI is good but not as good as the first two. YSL and Dior NVs chip really quickly but Chanel is good. Mavala and Rimel are good too. But my all time favourite which easily lasts 2 weeks is Models Own at Boots - 'tis truly marvellous and inexpensive and they have great shades.
