Dying grey roots. Luxury or necessity?

Whilst trying to sort out our finances dh and I clashed on this. He says it is disposable income of my choice, I say it is essential.

Which one?

Absolute necessity. He IBU.

AitchTwoOhOneTwo · 25/05/2012 10:34

necessity

ledkr · 25/05/2012 10:35

A necessity for sure. I think they look scruffy.

BunnyLebowski · 25/05/2012 10:38

Absolute necessity.

If I had to stop dyeing my hair and live with my greys DP would have to live with a miserable and self-conscious harridan rather than the chocolatey-haired sexpot he currently enjoys. You can't put a price on that Wink

orangeandlemons · 25/05/2012 10:38

Know this is off topic slightly, but how about mobile phone? He gets his from work, I pay for mine

Necessity both.

Hair for the reason Bunny stated and mobile because if you have children you need it so that school or anyone else looking after them can contact you in an emergency. Also so that if you find yourself in an emergency you can call police/ambulance/him.

DarrowbyEightFive · 25/05/2012 10:42

It's a necessity to dye grey roots yourself at home with a kit, but a luxury to pay for someone to do it at a salon.

A mobile is also a necessity, but it should be the cheapest PAYG you can find - anything else is a luxury.

BunnyLebowski · 25/05/2012 12:41

That's a good point Darrowby. I agree that salon hair dyeing is most definitely a luxury. I do mine at home so it's a tenner every 4-5 weeks. And I cut my own hair so there's no way in hell DP could moan about my hair-related expenditure.

Vintage dresses and t-bar shoes would be a slightly different matter though...................

teanosugar · 25/05/2012 13:02

absolute neccesity

OhBurger · 25/05/2012 14:39

I stopped doing mine then got a cropped cut! My hair is about 80% grey and I love it ( I'm only 33) Grin

Mollydoggerson · 25/05/2012 14:41

OhBurger, I'ld love to see your hair.

I personally don't think it is a necessity, natural grey hair can look really lovely, but half died/half grey is not so good.

janx · 25/05/2012 14:44

I am in similar boat although dp knows better to clash with me about it. I get my hair coloured at hairdressers and I should do it myself but I'm not very good at it. I would rather forgo other things to hold on to that luxuryGrin

ledkr · 25/05/2012 16:05

I did my own for years and eventually ended up with over processed dull hair. You cannot help but overlap it when you do it yourself.

I have an agreement with a salon now,if its just roots you will find alot of them will give you a regular price,i get mine done every 4 to 6 weeks,it would be one of the last things id stop.

Dh told me a fortnightly cleaner was an unecessary expense the other day Angry we both work and have 5 dc.

I had sky sports cut off to make up for all that unecessary expenditure Grin

OhBurger · 25/05/2012 17:14

I will put a pic on my profile later, haven't changed it since I started on MN ten years ago Blush

lumbago · 25/05/2012 17:18

I go to an aveda salon training night. £20. Takes longer

orangeandlemons · 25/05/2012 17:29

I have tried dyeing it myself. I ended up paying £70.00 quid to sort it out, it looked awful. Anyway have got him to back down Grin

I used to go to training days, but all trainees are qulified now Sad

Loving the sky sports Grin

absolutely essential!!

sue52 · 25/05/2012 20:03

That would be one of the last things to go. Essential.

cazza40 · 25/05/2012 20:58

Absolutely essential ! I too did a home dye kit in the interests of economising but after 6 months or so my hair looked terrible so back to the salon I would rather economise on other things !
