clothes for teenage boys please

gymboywalton · 24/05/2012 07:55

my 12 year old son is now huge and doesn't seem to be fitting many of the kids clothes anymore. i was relying on gap but even they seem a bit small now.

i need some smartish shorts for him.

he is about 5' 7" or 5' 8" and his waist is about a 30"ish

any top tips please?

I have 2 huge boys, I buy them mens clothing as the teen clothing doesn't fit,or does not allow much growing room. Not sure where you can get smart shorts, what about buying trousers and chopping the lower legs off and hemming them?

I get my boys shorts from sports direct for about £3 a pair, but they are sporty shorts rather than smart.

thanks for the tip re sports direct

have just spotted these but may get them for him

these are quite good too

They both look great, and smart. I got my DS1 a lovely shirt from new look men's.Good quality at a fair price. H and M do some nice men's stuff too. I find most places have very little in the way of teen boy clothing, once they are a 30" waist the mens stuff fits so there's more choice, but its 'grown up designs' that are not always attractive to the 12 year old mind.

I find shoes are a problem too! mine wear a mens size 11.I am hoping their feet stop growing soon!

does your lad get treated as if he is older, because he is tall? mine do, more is expected of them, especially my youngest who is an august birthday but is a head above his peer group.

badtasteflump · 24/05/2012 10:03

My DS1 has always been tall for his age and very slim. I buy lots of his clothes in Top Man - they always seem to fit well Smile

Bellettte · 24/05/2012 11:55

I have a 12 yr old also who is a big strapping lad and I have just started buying stuff in Primark-the small/extra small mens t-shirts, jogging bottoms, swimshorts, hoodies, sweatshirts are all a fairly good fit. I havent managed to get shorts there as they seem too large, for some reasonHmm. Shoes/sandals I get in Clarks as they last the longest but everything else is a small mens size.

gymboywalton · 24/05/2012 13:51

not sure aboyut the being treated as if he is older...he always used to when he was younger. he has always been a full head above all his friends and adults did treat him differently but now he's older it doesn't seem to happen so much for some reason. Although he's very tall with big broad shoulders etc, he's got a real baby face!
he is in size 10 shoes and i am PRAYING his feet slow down soon!

Men's quicksilver shorts from t k maxx. If his waist is 30 inches you'll have loads of choice. They do lots of longer tailored shorts and as a make it's probably acceptably cool to a 12 year old.

Maybe age 14 from boden or shorts by waist size from their Johnny B range?

Disappearing · 24/05/2012 23:25

Adults shorts, or trousers cut off and re-hemmed, particularly if he grows out of them length wise before with wise?

emdelafield · 25/05/2012 00:14

My DS2 ( almost 13) gets his casual clothes in H and M and Topman.
Good quality for the price and stylish without being logofied.
If you want smart shorts I would try Boden or Gant ( good quality but v expensive)

gymboywalton · 25/05/2012 08:29

can't do vry expensive at the moment!

will take him shopping this weekend and see what we can come up with
thanks for the tips

If possible I would say don't take him shopping. Last time DS 2 and I tried this there was practically bloodshed.

I now let DS1take him. They have a budget and an idea of what to get eg DS2 needs jeans/ shoes/ tshirts whatever but no more hoodies!

The other thing I do a lot is shop online.Returns and refunds are surprisingly easy and much less stressful than dragging DS2 round the shops!

bleedingheart · 25/05/2012 10:10

H&M does smaller sizes for men which would fit most teens I'd think.

Primark has just overhauled their boys department and the teen section is fantastic for boys now. Realyl uptodate, lovely chinos, muted tees, smart polo shirts etc. Really nice stuff.

Or look for Boden or Fat Face on Ebay.

QueenieLovesEels · 25/05/2012 11:01

Another vote for the mens section at Primark. My son fits in the xs and they don't look oversized. Great for chinos too.

gymboywalton · 28/05/2012 08:08

ok-just to update-h and m have some nice men's cotton shorts for 7.99 which unfortunately didn't fit ds. they were all baggy at the front and looked silly.and the biggest boys ones were too tight.

got one pair of denim shorts in sports direct.

tried m and s, debenhams[who go up to a 16 but in order to get the length he needed the 16 which was too big round the waist [sigh]

have oprdered some age 15 ones from the next directory which have an adjustable waist-will let you know!

Another vote for Primark here!
My 13 year old fits perfectly into their size XS mens clothing. The 14in collar shirts and 28 waist trousers are also a good fit too.

I wouldn't normally shop at primark but to be honest, at the rate he's still growing, there is no way I'm going to buy him anything expensive and tbh I've been pleased with the quality of the stuff I've got him so far - nothing's dropped to bits yet!..

And don't get me started on shoes..... Size 7 school shoes, trainers, rugby boots in September, size 9 school shoes, trainers, rugby boots in March and still growing -

Littlepumpkinpie · 28/05/2012 10:47

Just hit this problem myself ds1 is almost 13 and since September has out grown school trousers 4 times. He has been growing madly for the last year now its hard to keep up

gymboywalton · 28/05/2012 22:52

lovemy-there is just no way i can spend 44 quid on a pair of shorts for ds
just no way at all

but thanks anyway

the shorts from next arrived and the age 15 fits well-thank god

next thing is new trainers -he will need either a 10 1/2 or an 11
his toes are rgiht at the end of the size 10's
