how can I get a massive bun in my hair??

I've been at a wedding in liverpool today (had to come home early to 2yo DS) and did my usual up do with my trusty primark donut but I had serious bun envy as quite a few of the girls had enormous buns - clearly filled with bigger donuts than mine but can't find one anywhere online - anyone got any ideas??? Am itching to release my inner wag!!! :)

Someone did a thread about this a while ago. She made her own massive doughnut with the leg of a pair of tights and some cotton wool. The photo made it look fab. I'm sorry I can't remember who it was.

You could use a sock! There are tutorials on YouTube. You can get different size donuts as well. Or you could make your own 'rat' - collect the hair from your hairbrush and put it into a hairnet. You will need quit a lot but it's a more natural look.

Socks with the toes cut out work well. Though I have got very long hair, so any bun is a big bun

Big Bun Thread

You don't need a doughnut for a big bun!

Tie hair up high, split into 5, make top section smooth (brush it!), roll down to head loosely and pin both sides and pull to spread out a bit, repeat with other sections and smooth so no gaps are visible. Pin any loose sections and HEY PRESTO!! Big bun ahoy!!Grin easy when you know how!!

I have the Primark one but there is a bigger one available in Claire's Accessories. I can't actually make a tidy bun out of it myself, my hair is only shoulder length but I'm hoping it'll work when it grows longer.

Find an old fashioned chemists or a covered Market like the one in Brum. the stalls there sell lots of doughnuts, wigs, hair extensions and all sorts of useful undo bits at very good prices. DD2 was not pleased to see their clip in streaks were twice the length and half the price of Claire's.

i love the primark donut. but hair only just long enough now to use it, though i only use mine for work.

i was actually looking for a smaller version rather than a bigger one as my hair is only just touching my shoulders so i get bits pinging out all the time....can you get smaller ones anywhere?

PrisonerOfWaugh · 18/05/2012 23:46

Wow, have I wandered into some parallel world??

Just about killed myself laughing at the title, came on to suggest an iced finger might do the job, but you all sound as if you are serious Shock

I used to do massive buns back in the 80s. Sadly they were not fashionable then so i got mocked about my thick hair.

I never used a donut thing though - just did a ponytail with my head upside down then sort of flicked it out and pulled back in secured with long pins.

ItsRoxie · 18/05/2012 23:51

For a smaller bun Vicar, I use a home-made sock bun (find instructions on Youtube).

ThatVikRinA22 · 19/05/2012 00:11

home made sock bun??? sounds interesting! i will google....

amistillsexy · 19/05/2012 00:40

My home made sock bun is made with one of dh's old thick socks. It makes a lovely thick bun and great curls when I take it out. ( I have long hair though).

blueemerald · 19/05/2012 03:25

You can get smaller than average and slightly larger hair doughnuts in Claire's Accessories. I made a big big bun taking 3 normal doughnuts, cutting two and sewing them together to make a ring and then put the ring around the normal sized doughnut.

where is the best place to have the bun? low down or high up?

i actually managed to do mine today using the primark donut - i have no stray bits at all but it seems to depend on where i have the bun as i have layers.

i think a low down bun looks sophisticated but not on me!

thenightsky · 20/05/2012 22:11

When i was long haired I always did my bun on the top of my head... the bit that would burn if you were in the sun IYSWIM
