Dress for ladies day at the races

Please help me find something suitable. It will not be a posh racecourse but i am struggling with finding a suitable dress. I would prefer a shift dress and feel that i need knee length to suit my age but would be happy with anything that would make a size 16-18 look presentable

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Och, we'll get you sorted. No worries!

What sort of colours do you prefer / hate? How old are you? Which bits would you like to hide / emphasize?

MrsLettuce · 18/05/2012 17:54

Oh yeah, and how tall are you and what sort of budget?

theporkofpie · 19/05/2012 21:25

i don't mind what colour, i am mid 40s, am sort of what they call 'balanced' body wise and about 5' 6. The cheaper the better but not to look too cheap

this? - also in black and fuschia - looks good on the site but no idea how it is IRL.

Not a shift, but this shape would probably really flatter you, this is really nice if don't mind sleeveless, cheaper too.

LettuceLaughton · 19/05/2012 21:55

(Oh, and good / bad budget wise?)

theporkofpie · 20/05/2012 16:40

Thanks LettuceLaughton. I love the Audrey Hepburn one but worry about the length and my chunky knees but think i might indulge myself with it. I love all the prom dresses that are around at the moment but wish they would realise that we can't all wear short dresses and that once you are over 40 that you are not past it. Thanks for looking for me though

yy, all the too short dresses about ATM are like a strange form of torure. But, it's not a prom dress as such - is a 50s style dress and should fall under the knee, unless I'm very much mistaken. Wouldn't have linked otherwise Wink

springaroundthecorner · 20/05/2012 18:58

Lettuce, what great choices! Have you bought anything from that site? The prices are extraordinarily cheap.

I had look at this thread as I too am needing a dress for the races OP. I'm only small so a shift works best for me but I would love one of those Hepburn dresses.Envy

I'm going to a ladies day at the races /birthday dinner at the same time and tbh was going to wear this rather plain thing and dress it up with accessories

am similar size to you and it suits me and my huge norks

LettuceLaughton · 20/05/2012 19:09

Ha, I wish! Even at those prices they're too expensive for me ATM. I've heard tell that the quality is good though.

LettuceLaughton · 20/05/2012 19:10

oh, ggirl - I like that, very nice.

ggirl · 20/05/2012 19:17

thanks lettuce , i'm looking for a floaty thin nice (maybe patterned) wrap/shawltype thing to wear with it

LettuceLaughton · 20/05/2012 19:19

SOunds prefect! Do you have any sari shops near by? They may well have just the thing.

ggirl · 20/05/2012 19:22

Good idea !!
not here on south coast but I am going up to sheffield to pick dd up in a few weeks , there must be one there?

LettuceLaughton · 20/05/2012 19:24

Many, or at least there were last time i was there about 10 years ago. If you start a thread there's bound to be someone who can point you to a couple of the best...

ggirl · 20/05/2012 19:26
