Assume you have no clothes, what would be in your capsule summer wardrobe?

I have hardly any clothes after years of pregnancies and weight gain and eventually weight loss. The only things I have that fit are winter clothes and jeans and I don't even have many of them!

So, if you were facing summer with absolutely no summer clothes at all what would be on your hit list of things to get?

I can afford Dorothy Perkins/Zara type prices and I'm a average height size 10.

I was in this exact position a few weeks ago. Got a back pay from work so had about £300 to spend. I've dropped from a 14-16 to a 12-14.I bought :

Purple skinnies from asda £12
Orange skinnies from H&M £20
Cobolt blue jeggings from M&S £22.50
Raspberry skinnies from Dorothy Perkins
Normal denim jeggings from M&S £22.50

Loads of long length coloured vest from H&M

Black jersey blazer from Miss selfridge

Navy Jersey blazer from H&M £17.50 (with all the discount codes from on here)

4 Of the MN £1.99 H&M dresses.

nude ballet pumps from next £25

silver ballet pumps from next £25

Loads of cheapy coloured jewellery

A few lovely scarves in different colours from h&m and primark etc.

Feel so much better.

£1.99 dresses? I fear I have missed out!

I love the idea of some coloured skinnies, I'm not sure if I'm brave enough but I could try on some I like the idea of purple ones, especially for £12!
I'll have a look at some blazers, would you just wear one with skinnies and a vest top?

Can't say as I'm great with the whole capsule wardrobe thing, but this summer I have tried to buy clothes within a palette of navy, grey, white and lilac so everything goes together. It is sort of working (the odd item of neon pink or bright green has crept in) but it is making getting dressed a lot easier!

mrsebojones · 27/04/2012 07:54

I also tend to stick to a palette of navy and neutrals with turquoise or blues as an accent colour. This year I've bought:
next white linen trousers
Next relaxed fit skinny jeans (that can be worn turned to 7/8 length)
Next Turquoise skinnys
Next navy daisy print dress
next navy and white stripe bow t-shirt
Dorothy Perkins white cardi (all the discounts on here)
zara breton and some long line vests
New look gold ballet flats
clarks low wedge sandals
dune high wedges

off on a mini moon in June and plan to mix and match this stuff then.

ive noticed that everything is skinnies and leggings. after realising my shape doesn't really suit skinnies (im an apple, i do have thin legs, but i guess it highlights my big waist?) what other choices are there? i have boyfriend jeans i like, but they look too dressed down for a lot of places. i would like to wear skirts but have no comfy shoes to go (ballets wreck my feet)

straight cut jeans just look a bit boring to me. any other ideas?

PooPooInMyToes · 27/04/2012 10:58

Seeing as its for the summer i would chose . . .

A couple of nice summer dresses, preferably semi fitted which can be dressed up and down

A long floaty skirt (love them, so comfy and easy to wear)

Selection of little cardigans

Tank top/vest tops/strapless in a variety of colours

A pair of jeans or casual trousers for cooler days

Some flip flops

smarter wedge heeled summer shoes

. . . Some would be in the bright colours which suit you best and the rest would be neutral colour such as cream, beige and grey so you can mix and match.

Aah if only i could afford new clothes!

Thanks for all those suggestions. I am going to go shopping at the weekend and I will have a look at what there is and try to get some of those basics that you have all mentioned and try to put a collection of clothes together that go with each other. That will be a real test of my fashion sense!

Lucky you!

I seem to have gone insane with dresses this year Blush
Picked up some lovely bird/swallow print v neck dresses from sainsburys and they were £20 each

bigpants103 · 29/04/2012 07:29

JAN I'm a size 12-14 apple and I wear chinos or 7/8 trousers. They are much baggier than my skinnies but everytime i wear them someone asks if I've lost weight. It's strange because i think they add volume to me but they might make my waist look smaller because they are bigger on the hip.

I've also got lots of dresses to wear with leggings. I've also got a couple of maxi tee-shirt dresses from H&M for £12.99. look nice with a denim jacket or little cardi.

Search the H&M £1.99 dresses on here and the thread will come up. Still doing them but may not have all colours and sizes. Code 1304 gets you £5 off so even cheaper.
