Wedding dress for an older bride

helloitsme · 21/04/2012 14:14

It's not me!! But I have a relative who is getting married who is 70! It's a happy day for all of us :), but was wondering if you guys have any ideas about dresses for her. She is 5 foot 2, has grey hair and a good figure, probably a size 10. She is uncomfortable in heels and would want to avoid being too revealing in her dress if possible I think.
All suggestions welcome! Thanks :)

how delightful.
I would say a pastel coloured woollen crepe suit- below knee length, simple lapels, lovely shirt, matching flats and a hat with small veil. Could be a brighter colour depending on personality.
Otherwise, a short very fashionable dress- designer- vivienne westwood modern and edgy. Make sure she gets a good handbag too.

KlickKlackknobsac · 21/04/2012 14:20

I think I have described a Jackie suit- Kennedy outfit with the suit- but I think that would be very stylish and smart!!

ivanapoo · 21/04/2012 15:48

If she wanted to wear a wedding dress Phase Eight do a nice wearable bridal range which I think would suit.

I thought Camilla P-B looked good on her wedding day as an older bride...

NoMoreCakeOclock · 21/04/2012 16:09

My Nan was in her 80s when I got married. She wore a polka dot dress with a little navy jacket and looked amazing! She's also an 8/10 and about 4ft11 (and shrinking)

I think hers was from Precis Petite. Do you live anywhere near a Boundary Mill? They have literally acres of suitable outfits and lots of petite ranges.

PooPooInMyToes · 21/04/2012 17:00

Ah how lovely!

Ephiny · 21/04/2012 19:04

I was going to suggest that first one mentioned by BramblyHedge, there is a matching coat as well which might make a nice outfit for an older lady.

I hope she finds something to suit, how lovely and exciting for her and the family :)

Safmellow · 21/04/2012 19:09

Agree with KlickKlack, I'm picturing Stanford's mum in Sex and the City in her vintage Chanel! :)

helloitsme · 21/04/2012 19:12

Hey thanks, this is great. I am sending her a link to the thread so that she can have a look and see if she has anything to add :)

How very, very sweet and wonderful!

How about an ivory satin shift, a great wee jacketand beautiful ballerinas?

MrsLettuce · 21/04/2012 19:31

Ah, I read as her being in her 80's so didn't link to this, but she's 70 so shall link to this after all. Most lovely dress.

Also rather nice

MrsLettuce · 21/04/2012 19:34

Do the shoes need to be flat or just not stilettos?

helloitsme · 21/04/2012 19:47

Thanks! I'm not able to open the 'great wee jacket' link, but I can see the rest. I think she is going to have fun shopping now, I really didn't realise there were so many options out there! I will ask her about the shoes. My guess is that she might wear a low and comfortable heel, but I'm not sure, I'll let you know.

Great wee jacket. I can't get it to link from the coast site Hmm, but it's there 'Paloma Duchess Satin Jacket'.

These shoes look comfy, as do these.

There is a lot of choice!

MoonlightandRoses · 21/04/2012 20:42

Not madly traditional, but given 70 is not that old, how about any of the below? Should all work with a low / mid heel too:

20's style
contemporary ankle length
closer to an 8 than 10, and quite expensive

dress & coat option in a shift dress There are a few things by FWM that might suit - they also sit well on a 5'2" person.

Am not so good at finding shoes or bags on line so have left that bit of the request out...

And congratulations to your aunt - hope she has a fantastic day.

KlickKlackknobsac · 22/04/2012 15:07

Make sure she gets good underwear- well fitting spanx style stuff- and maybe something basque-like for the wedding night. I say this as I think structured sexy underwear is the key to successful sex for the over 70's - improves the confidence of your relative- keeps the belly covered and the boobs in place- everything else will be fine! This may be too personal for you to discuss with her but I thought about I would post it on here so she can see it.
And yes, I am assuming they will have damn good sex- why the devil not!!!
Enjoy.
Where's the honeymoon?
We may be able to suggest even more outfits....

helloitsme · 24/04/2012 18:23

My dear mumsnetters,
Well, she has read the posts and clearly enjoyed the links, and has sent me some feedback about what she wants. Here it is, I have just copied it from her email:

I would like a dress with three quarter sleeves ( or full or elbow length?) ? older arms are not lovely ? which rules out lots of dresses which I otherwise like a lot.
I am not a floaty chiffon dress person, though they can look lovely ? I want something more sharp and fitted , and I do like A line.
I am also open to a good suit or skirt and top.
Just below the knee is a good length for me, not mid ? calf which makes me look like a dwarf. Full length might be good maybe, but on balance I prefer below the knee.
Colour ? ivory or cream might be good but I am a ?winter? in terms of colour and think I?d need a good contrast too. I love ice blue and also turquoise. The key words given to me about colour were ?clear and vivid? and that contrast is worth going for.
I won?t wear stiletto heels, but am OK with lower heels.
All ideas welcome! I am grateful for advice! Advice which doesn?t exactly fit what I have written here may open up new ideas for me too.

So, please don't kill me for not giving all these hints at the start of the thread! I started the thread as a nice suprise for her, which is why I didn't check with her what she wanted first...maybe I should have done Hmm. Anyway, if anyone has more to add based on the above, I think both she and I would be delighted! Let's say we are evolving as shoppers, and any and all hints gratefully received.
Thanks Thanks Thanks to all of you!

Pricey but divine. Would be great with bright shoes, silver would be fab too.

MoonlightandRoses · 24/04/2012 20:56

teal, knee length (model is 5'11") might not be sufficiently tailored though

And I love the one MrsLettuce has linked to

MoonlightandRoses · 24/04/2012 21:49

or how about a classic 3/4 length sleeve shift or
Prada short sleeve shift

Butwhatdoyoudoallday · 24/04/2012 21:59

A bit Kate Middleton but beautiful!

Simple and elegant

Dress & Jacket combo (love this)

Congratulations to your relative!

MrsLettuce · 25/04/2012 06:50

turquoise, full length

helloitsme · 01/05/2012 06:41

ok, it's been a while :) sorry, was waiting to see what happened with the dress...
So, she loved looking at the thread. She looked at all the dresses online and told me how kind you all were for looking for her. Annnd....she got clear about what she wanted! It was as if by looking at all the ideas, she at last understood where she wanted to go! She wanted a shift ish dress, but with a more flared skirt but still fitted at the top. And she wanted blue or turquoise. So, she went online herself and searched, and this is what she found.
I am copying below what she wrote to me in an email:

I tried it on in Harrods ( an experience in itself just going there! ) it fitted ? , and it looked great ? customers passing by stopped to say how good it looked! Lovely colour too. After more thinking we have bought it on Ebay for a significant reduction on the shop price ? still expensive but it is a special occasion!

So, once again, Mumsnet to the rescue! Thank you, we will see a very happy bride at her wedding later this year Thanks
