What's the difference between a maxi dress and a generic long or evening dress?

Just that really!

I wore a long dress to my brothers wedding (Jaques Vert but not too old lady I promise!), and I can't decide if it was a maxi dress, or an evening dress, or something g else. It was proper lined thick fabric, not beachy. So is there a difference? And if so, can anyone explain it?

I think maxi dresses can be casual or more evening wear but I would say the difference between maxi and a normal long dress is that maxi usually is empire line or higher and sort of flow-ey like.
