maxi dress for a wedding? yay or nay?

I tried this on today and it was surprisingly nice on, quite silky material that I liked. Think it would be ok for a wedding or too casual? I would wear with cork wedges I think and I don't know what else, wee cardy or short jacket probably

I'm really struggling to find something - am 5'3'', big norks, short legs, size 12/14, big tummy to hide (sound sexy, hey?) so if anyone has seen any lovely dresses please say...!! I'm getting desperate and am leaning towards a maxi just to be comfy and hide everything.

I don't think maxi is ever appropriate for a wedding. As well as usually being too casual, you look like you're trying to compete with the bride. Sorry :)

EnjoyResponsibly · 18/04/2012 22:22

I think that would be fine. I think you're in trouble if the maxi crosses into bridesmaid territory, but the line and fabric of yours doesn't do that.

To be honest I'd wear more formal shoes than cork wedges, which say holiday to me.

startail · 18/04/2012 22:40

It's beautiful, not holiday colours, I'd wear it if I was thinner.

As for shoes, I've got granny block heeled sandals for the wedding I'm going to and had low wedge sling backs last time. I don't do heels, they are against the Geneva Convention (instruments of torture).

Was going to say no to a maxi, but I love that dress!! Lovely and would wear with dressier heels for a wedding.

GoblersKnob · 19/04/2012 11:17

I think it's lovely. I would wear with flats though, heels with maxis look very odd.

I have worn pretty jewelled flip flops to a wedding before, depends how posh though I suppose.

MyMelody · 19/04/2012 13:20

I think that dress is lovely, I would definitely wear that to a wedding.
You could dress it up with a nice necklace and wear with a nice shawl or shrug.
I think its important to wear something fairly comfy to a wedding anyway, you are there for a long time and I would just have a headache by the end of the day if I wasn't comfortable!

Ephiny · 19/04/2012 13:47

I like it, it's fine for a wedding IMO.

RobinSparkles · 19/04/2012 13:57

I really like that dress. I think it would be lovely for a wedding! I was going to say: fine unless it's white or ivory Wink.

M'kay.. you're joking right? Is there a campaign afoot on MN to just get women to wear their bra and panties to weddings cos like, if they dare to wear clothes of any description, they might upstage the bride??!
A grip needs to be got here folks...

OP that dress would be perfect for a wedding. I wore similar to a summer wedding last year and not only did I get lots of compliments but about five others were wearing completely different maxis and also looked perfectly appropriate.

I agree flat jewelled sandals would look great with it.

foosty · 19/04/2012 17:04

thanks for all the responses! I really do like the one I linked to but ended up ordering this one from Wallis which I thought would be nice for the wedding - it's in a country house next month

coral maxi

I'll see what it's like and I know the other one is there if it's no good. The reason I went for it is that I just found out the bridesmaids dresses are dark blue...

also I can't wear flats much as I'd want to - I'm 5'3'' and struggle in heels, but figured I could manage in my wedges and they'd be mostly hidden anyway. Plus I'll be comfy! Jewelled flats would be gorgeous though.

Ooh, that one's nice too, Foosty! Quite a similar style - will look lovely with wedges.

RobinSparkles · 19/04/2012 17:11

I do like the sound of the jewelled flats but I see what you mean, I'm the same height as you.

starfishmummy · 19/04/2012 17:21

I think maxi is fine as long as it doesn't look too bridesmaidy, and that one should be OK

KisMittz · 19/04/2012 17:30

I think they are both gorgeous and would be suitable. Jewelled flats sounds really nice. Especially with the coral one Smile

I am bookmarking those!!

foosty · 19/04/2012 17:42

thanks! The v-neck and crossover at the bust is really flattering on my shape - I was surprised how much I liked it. I'll let you know how the coral one is when it comes!

I'm off to find some jewelled wedges....

quick update - the Wallis dress came and is gorgeous. I LOVE it. It's not all billowy, but hangs beautifully. Can't wait to wear it! And my cork wedges look fab with it too...just need to find a wee fitted balzer/cardy/wrap to go over it.

Cheers for all your help!
