only wear flapper style dresses? I'm petite and I don't think they'll suit me. Istylista lists that style as a definite NO!

I need to be gatsby/1920s for a long weekend, have been surfing online today and can't really see anything :S

My sister has a whole section of her vintage blog for the 1920s, lots of ideas there. Including 1920s Halloween costumes Grin

pjs

Karbea · 17/04/2012 21:45

I can't wear pjs for 4 days.

What about a bias cut evening dress like Keira's in Atonement or check out the Crawley sisters in Downton Abbey (slightly earlier)? For day time stuff, take a look at the fashion in Gosford park or even Bugsy Malone. Cloche hat is essential for the day! I hope you find something.

Karbea · 17/04/2012 21:52

But where do you actually buy things like that? I can't see anything like that for sale.

You'll be glad to know they also wore loose trousers as well Smile - Coco Chanel was the innovator for this, so maybe have a look at some of her early work and see what's about?

You could then play the 'avant garde' one and wear a tuxedo for the evening too.

If you do have to go for more traditional 20's, then use strings of long necklaces knotted at about waist length, or go for a long fur / silk stole done the same way - it should be more flattering, while still in keeping with the era.

Sounds like a good week-end idea though.

boogiewoogie · 17/04/2012 21:55

Are you after originals? Chances are, they will not be in the vintage shop in wearable condition or if they are, they will cost you a fortune! No harm in discussing with a vintage shop owner though as she/he will be in the know. I'd look on eBay first.

Karbea · 17/04/2012 22:05

No I don't plan to go for originals, I'm thinking essense of 1920s is probably the way to go.
It's mostly going to be gay men, who love dressing up, they are going to look amazing, I need help big time! :(

Oops - cross post with everyone else. Best places to dig are eBay and any vintage /second-hand shops close to you - they may well be able to get something in if they don't have it now.

MoonlightandRoses · 17/04/2012 22:24

Ah, in which case, maybe something like this for day:

jumpsuit - could look good with requisite strings of necklaces

not too bad for a drop waist

This for evening?
short shift

or this?
Dotty P's

Karbea · 17/04/2012 22:39

I'm loving those ideas. Thank you!

Anymore???

You could dress as a man one night (evening suit/tux & slicked hair). Apparently it was quite the thing in certain (posh) circles.

MoonlightandRoses · 17/04/2012 23:12

one more 'maybe' dresscould work if the skirt is loose not fitted

Think you will have to either vintage or eBay if you need more than one hat though - only ones I could find were:

cloche-esque
ditto

For the beads, wide ribbons and feathers that were a feature of evening headpieces, try eBay or your local haberdashers

The little black dress, 20s style

Some spectacular dresses here and a gorgeous velvet jacket.
