Maxi dresses on short people?

A good or bad idea? Especially as I would only have heels on sometimes.

If it was a very fitted maxi, maybe?

Billowing maxi's don't seem to suit many women Grin

TooEasilyTempted · 15/04/2012 19:46

Bad idea.

I tried a couple of petite maxi dresses on last weekend (I'm 5ft 2, size 8) but they just made me look short and dumpy.

GilbertandGeorge · 15/04/2012 19:51

If short and slim and maxi is fitted, jersey type material - they can look nice.

Billowy style on the short and wide look ludicrous.

I think maxis with wedges or heels, à la Colleen Rooney, look slightly ridiculous.

Yorkshiremother79 · 15/04/2012 19:55

Definitely not a billowy one - billowy anything looks dreadful on me Sad

I'm 5ft exactly. I'd either look like I was playing dress up or like one of those toilet roll cover dolls Blush. Not for me, ta.

anniewoo · 15/04/2012 21:49

Maxi dresses are awful on most people.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 15/04/2012 21:53

Depends how slim you are - if you are reasonably slim and it's a fairly form-fitting maxi, I've recently become converted. I think only certain heels are okay with them though - I've been wearing mine with heeled ankle boots but I think later it will only be worn with flat sandals.

Hulababy · 15/04/2012 21:57

I'm 5 foot and I sometimes wear one, esp on holiday. I like them, they are comfy and I find them cool and breezy when warm. Don't really care abiut what other people think.

suburbandweller · 16/04/2012 10:02

5'3" size 6-8 maxi dress wearer here Smile. I think the fitted jersey ones look best but I have a vair lovely more billowy DVF one which I always get complimented on when wearing so I figure it must look ok. Always wear with flats or wedges though, would never ever wear with heels. Would definitely avoid big prints too.

minipie · 16/04/2012 10:43

I'm short and have a couple. IMO they look best if they are fitted round the waist (not the more usual maternity empire line design) and if they have straps or a halterneck rather than being strapless (more elongating than strapless).

cazza40 · 16/04/2012 15:07

Sorry no just does not look good on short people

TheCraicDealer · 16/04/2012 16:02

I have this one and I love it. The slit is a really nice touch, and you can get in in a few different colours.

OracleInaCoracle · 16/04/2012 16:12

I have a couple of maxi's that I always, always get complimented in. its all about the fit and the accessories. always get petite, and always dress down.

bonzo77 · 16/04/2012 16:27

Im 5"2. I've got one that looks fine. Cap sleeved, black and grey horizontal stripes. Very clingy. Wear it with trainers or Birkenstocks. It makes me look short. But I am short and happy to be so. Wouldn't wear a billowy now though because then I'd look fat and short.

drywhiteplease · 16/04/2012 16:41

Think maxi dresses are tricky and my rule is to keep it v simple and streamlined.as long as proportions are right for your height and the fabric is a drapery jersey I think they can look nice.

drywhiteplease · 16/04/2012 16:46

The dress is not in hose hideous stripes, but in black!!!!

MrsCampbellBlack · 16/04/2012 18:11

Of course they can look fine. With most items of clothing they can look good on most people depending a lot on your body proportions and how you wear it.

I'm just 5ft and size 6-8 and tend to wear ones which are like an elongated tank top - so not at all billowing.
