In a few weeks I'm going out with dp and we're going to meet some friends of his. We're going to a gig, one of his friends is in the band. I haven't been to anything like that for years and I'm freaking out now about what to wear. The last time I was going to things like that I was a student so a very different lifestyle and wardrobe.

Apparently it's an indie band. Struggling to get much more detail than that!

PLease, please suggest what I should wear. I'm 5'3, about a size 8, suit autumny colours, like black (of course! don't we all) can walk in heels but need to feel comfortable and relaxed in what I'm wearing because I'm feeling pretty nervous.

Skinny jeans. Top. Ballet flats.

That's what I wear to everything though. I do go to gigs although not cool ones anymore

redhappy · 11/04/2012 08:35

can I wear jeans?!

Got no idea where it is. I just know it's in Bristol.

Skinny jeans yes. Ballet flats are a bit middle class Mummy IMO. I wear Toms.

redhappy · 11/04/2012 08:40

Toms? God I don't know anything anymore! Will look them up.

What sort of top? Like a blouse or something? I have a small bust (which I am happy with don't need to emphasise it) and I like to look like my tummy is flat if possible!

Maybe something like this?

A bit too old. I like blouses with skinny jeans if you have a small bust. I don't.

The cool kids are wearing the coloured skinny jeans. The beige ones look lovely if you are slim. Just go to Topshop/Primark. I'd avoid Debenhams.

UnnamedFemaleProtagonist · 11/04/2012 08:51

How old are you?

redhappy · 11/04/2012 08:55

I've just got some beige jeans, not super skinny but more of a tight straight leg. I think I will go with them. I can't pull off Toms with a straight face I'm afraid, they just remind me of summer holidays as a child.

What colour top do you think? And jacket? I like to be warm! I've been looking for a new jacket for ages. And jewellery.

Top to toe basically!

  1. I have a young face though apparently, and a slim frame, so I think I can carry off most things except I no longer have a flat tummy, that's the main limitation.

I don't know then. I'll have to leave you in someone else's capable hands Grin.

I'm nearly 37 but a full time student so I dress like one. I got asked for ID on Saturday so can't be doing too bad.

UnnamedFemaleProtagonist · 11/04/2012 08:59

I don't wear jackets or jewellery or straight legged jeans, sorry.

You are only 30 and so slim: get thee to Topshop.

googietheegg · 11/04/2012 09:02

I'd go for skinny black jeans and a cool, not too tight t shirt. Go to h&m and you'll easily find both for about £30. Maybe a black leather jacket if you have one too? Or a big skinny Cardigan. On your feet, I'd go for black biker boots or suede ankle boots in black or grey. Add a few random necklaces and bangles, make sure your hair's not too tidy, smudge about some black eyeliner and loads of mascara and you're good to go!

redhappy · 11/04/2012 09:03

Topshop of course!

No jacket? Don't you get cold?!

UnnamedFemaleProtagonist · 11/04/2012 09:05

I wear shorts with thick tights most days. If I was young and tiny like you, I'd wear shorts, tights, a pussy bow blouse type of affair and some shoe boots.

Iatemyskinnyperson · 11/04/2012 09:05

Straight jeans, this and fitted leather jacket. Simples

UnnamedFemaleProtagonist · 11/04/2012 09:05

I have coats for winter but I have hundreds of slouchy cardi's from Topshop or Primarni and I alternate between them.

redhappy · 11/04/2012 09:06

wow googie thanks! Got suede black ankle boots, got v.dark indigo jeans will they do?

I've got thick unruly frizzy air, what sort of updo is good? I like doing little plaits and things, but sometimes think it looks a bit young.

OP posts:
redhappy · 11/04/2012 09:08

iatemyskinnyperson I really like that blouse.

suburbandweller · 11/04/2012 09:50

redhappy you are exactly the same height and dress size as me (but 2 years younger, pah). I would wear skinny black or indigo jeans, a top with a bit of glitz to it, and probably either a leather jacket or some other kind of casual jacket (Anthropologie do a good casual one which can be dressed up or down). Would personally always go with heels as it makes me feel a bit more dressed to go out iyswim plus my bum looks big in skinnies if I don't make my legs look longer. I usually top it off with a bangle and a statement ring (don't really like necklaces).

googietheegg · 11/04/2012 12:24

red your jeans and boots sound perfect! Little random plaits in your hair sounds cool too - go for it!

TheSmallClanger · 11/04/2012 12:37

Don't wear heels to a gig. If you're watching the band in the main standing area, they'll restrict your mobility and possibly injure someone else's feet.
