Anyone heard of oil pulling?

Not sure whether to post this here or in health. Basically the theory is that you swish oil in your mouth each morning for 20 mins then spit it out, leaving you with much whiter teeth and heaps of health benefits...
This is not the sort of thing I believe in but I am going to give it a try for a few days.here

20minutesShock You have to swish oil around your mouth for 20 mins!!

I can't keep my trap shut for 20 minutes, the dses would run wild and dh would think I'd left homeGrin

sleepysox · 05/04/2012 13:02

I only get 20 mins in the morning, to shower, get dressed, do make up, everything really. I'd love to know how you get on though, and whether you notice a difference.

snowmummy · 05/04/2012 13:40

It sounds revolting. I don't think I could do it.

GoblersKnob · 05/04/2012 14:01

I dunno, I am suspicious of anything that claims that many health benefits........

hopkin · 05/04/2012 14:44

It says it prevents the growth of malignant tumours. Seems legit.

LtheWife · 05/04/2012 14:54

It does have some scientific basis, but in reality it's no more effective than normal good oral hygeine. Simply put there's a shitload of bacteria found in the mouth that if left to its own devices can cause a whole host of different diseases, not just in the mouth, but in the whole body. Oil pulling has been shown to reduce the total bacteria count in the mouth, but no more so than using mouthwash. Regular brushing, flossing, use of mouthwash and trips to the dentist will be much more effective than oil pulling.

RatDesPaquerettes · 05/04/2012 15:00

It heals paralysis... Hmm

MissFoodie · 05/04/2012 15:30

LOL

I love the spelling too

RatDesPaquerettes · 05/04/2012 16:44

oil pulling... leg pulling? Grin

Having said that, it probably won't do you any harm...

MistyMountainHop · 05/04/2012 17:13

hahahahaa i am sorry but that sounds like a right load of bullshit :o

SquishyCinnamonSwirls · 05/04/2012 17:16

Did you read that on April fools?

I couldn't keep something in my mouth for that long I'd be gagging after 3 minutes!

jifnotcif · 05/04/2012 17:18

I brushed my teeth with face cream once (by mistake). It was absolutely nauseating.

dexter73 · 05/04/2012 17:19

If it was that good surely we'd all be doing it?! I think I would be wanting to puke after 30 seconds.

dexter73 · 05/04/2012 17:19

Did it cure your all your ailments though jifnotcif?

MissBeehivingUnderTheMistletoe · 05/04/2012 19:48

Would chips be an acceptable substitute?

DeepThought · 05/04/2012 19:51

Oilpulling heals totally ?head-aches, bronchitis, tooth pain, thrombosis, eczema, ulcers and diseases of stomach, intestines, heart, blood, kidney, liver, lungs and women?s diseases. It heals diseases of nerves, paralysis, and encephalitis. It prevents the growth of malignant tumors, cuts and heals them. Chronic sleeplessness is cured.?

snake oil being sold here folks

lololizzy · 05/04/2012 20:41

i keep hearing that about drinking your first urine flow of the day. I couldn't do it, but Sarah Miles famously used to do it and I know someone (male) who does do it. Got to say, he has the most beautiful skin and teeth I've ever seen...clear and baby soft, even though he lives pretty much 'off the land' and in harsh conditions

SuePurblybiltFromChocolate · 05/04/2012 20:45

20 jeffing minutes?

jifnotcif · 06/04/2012 00:42

The only thing it cured Dexter is dd's ability to laugh at me and remind me about it at every given opportunity.

saffronwblue · 06/04/2012 02:44

Well I have tried it for 2 mornings now (and am now stunningly beautiful and cured of every ailment). It is both disgusting and weirdly enjoyable.
What I find quite sweet about the whole thing is that no-one stands to gain financially. There is no "special" system or product to buy.
I am going to keep it up over Easter as a magic counteract for chocolate.
