can i put a home dye over salon highlights?

I've got dark brown hair and recently started getting grey hairs. I've had a few visits to the hairdresser to have lighter highlights put in but the grey is taking over! I can't be bothered/ afford to go to the salon every six weeks so was thinking of dying it at home... is that a disaster waiting to happen?

The last highlights were done about six weeks ago and there isn't much root growth but the grey is still really noticeable and I hate it. Any tips would be much appreciated!

I've had greys for years and have tried everything!! Home dye works, I've been happy with most of my results but it does take an element of motivation to dye your hair every six weeks or pay to have it dyed. For the past year, between dyes, I have been using Aveda Clove Colour conditioner which is fantastic at evening out the greys, highlights and my underlying colour. You might find that one of their other colours suits your base / highlights better. A hairdresser suggested mixing this with conditioner and using once a week.
