Has anyone regretted having layers put into long hair?

I have long highlighted hair and now I'm 35 and busy with a job and three kids, I never bother to wear it down. It's always up in a clip and I now increasingly think it looks crap both up and down! When it's down-even when straightened or blow-dried-it looks a bit lank and witchy. It can be curly and when I make the effort-looks much better like that, which makes me that that it needs to have a bit more volume, but I can't maintain the curliness all the time as it's quite high-maintenance.

Would layers achieve this aim? However, would they make it look a) like a mullet or b) not lovely and shiny (not that it is now though!!)?

Sounds like my hair except that i dye mine brown! I have long layers put in my hair just to break it up a bit, layers look good on straight/straightened hair. I notice that when i leave my hair to dry naturally it has a curly/frizzy thing going on and thats when my layers make it look worse. For curly hair i suggest to keep it all one length or very long layers, for straight hair have more layers.
