How do you get marks out of suede shoes?

I wear my comfy suede loafers (brown) all the time and they have loads of wear left but are now looking grubby and stained. How do I clean them? DH says try putting them in the washing machine but he has lots of daft ideas.

use baking powder. cover the suede or the stain in it, leave it for 15/20 mins, then brush off with a stiff brush or suede brush. Repeat if necessary, it may take a few times.

A good rub with a suede/nuebuck rubber and a steam over the kettle.
