Roseacea and the oil cleaning method - Should I gve a go?

Hi,

Would really like to try the oil method but not sure if it is suitable for someone with roseacea - bit worried about the HOT muslin bit - usually heat a big no-no...... any thoughts/advice greatly appreciated.

Yes. I suffer from rosacea and do ocm. I don't make the flannel super hot just medium hot and I am very very careful when wiping off the oil to avoid wiping too hard.

It works well for me in several ways. It makes my skin less sensitive and my skin doesn't burn or sting. Also seems to keep the redness down better than anything else. Avoid castor oil. Made my face sting. I just use jojoba, grapeseed or almond or a mix of them.

If you do it gentle it will be great.

Skandi1 - thank you so much for replying - really, really appreciated. I have had some bad experiences in the past where I have managed to really upset my skin (most recently tried Dr Hauschka and ended up with a big red face)

Do you use the jojoba etc "pure" or mix with a carrier oil and dilute it?

I concur. Rosacea is not a reason to avoid hot cloth cleansing. I find the same thing for steam rooms as well.
As well as cleansing with oil, you should be eating it as well. I've posted on this before so forgive me if you've already read this advice.
Good fats have done more for my rosacea than anything else. Specifically supplements of 2,000mg a day of epa and lots of nuts and seeds. i also use dermalogica barrier repair cream at night and spf 50 every day.

I use pure jojoba and pure grapeseed and have sometimes mixed them. Grapeseed is less moisturising so good in summer.

There are loads of oils you can try. I have just started using argan oil and borage oil. Both meant to help rosacea and so far very good.

I think most pure good quality oils will help just avoid castor. I know the point with castor oil is that it really removes deep grime and black heads quickly but it will make your face sore and v red.

FWIW. I have tried lots of so called rosacea "anti redness" ranges (Roche posay, hauschka, auverne, Clinique etc etc etc) and wasted vast sums of cash just to end up red and sore.

I use the Liz Earle sunscreen as I find it's one of the few which doesn't bring on my perioral dermatitis (nice!). Can't use the chemical sunscreens either as they make me red.

Have you tried Finacea on prescription from GP. It does help the redness. Not entirely a miracle but best available. And it's not an antibiotic.

Am week 1 into doc and so far

• right after cleansing, my skin looks/feels great but somehow not fully moisturized so i dab on some dermatologica gentle soothing serum to hydrate and soothe.

I do use hot water but do not apply and leave the cloth on my face. I pat and wipe across section by section.

• in the morning still some redness but disappears right after a splash of fresh water, toning and moisturizing ( I use a hyaluronic acid basic formulation such as the Eucerin hyaluron filler).
• A few minor breakouts days 2-4, pretty much cleared now.

I have dry skin and rosecea, I use almond oil and a warm muslin cloth - I did NOT get one with castor oil at all so have just stuck to the almond oil. My skin has improved loads.

am using olive oil btw and will definitely stay clear of castor oil

skandi1 - have only been to the GP once and they gave me Metronidazole about 3 years ago (which help but have never been really clear of it). Rosacea started when I was preganant, got worse during a year of breastfeeding and then got very bad after a really stressful job and a miscarriage. I then started the round of various high street creams (mixed results and far too many "red faces" here too! I am currently 37 weeks pregnant, not using metronidazole and worried about the impact of breastfeeding will have this time round. I have loads of visible red veins (nice!) as a result of the flare up over the last few years. Would be great to find something that would at least be kind to my skin (and avoid that lovely red sore feeling). Off oil shopping tomorrow :) Will ask GP about Finacea - am determined I am going to be more proactive this time and not just accept it (have even looked into laser treatement - just got to get saving)

lovetomatoes - will go and find your threads next! I think you are right about diet (mines always better when I am feeling better and eating well at the mo including oily fish and my skin isn't too bad!). Just need to remeber this when tempted to eat rubbish..... Will look into the supplements.

Laptop - thanks for the step by step guide and your expereince so far - will gve me confidence if I also have a break out in the early days - I'm always a bit nervous when trying something new and have had quite a few bad experiences before.

Hi 2ndtime. You can use finacea while bfing. I did for my second child. Sadly didn't know about it first time around.

If you decide to try finacea, make sure you use it over moisturiser otherwise it stings like buggery. The instructions tell you not to but a dermatologist told me this is the best way. No stinging if applied this way.
