A 30 something who is going for a family Sunday afternoon stroll in the country followed by afternoon tea at a relaxed 3* country hotel?

Coloured Jeans or cotton trousers with stretch - that you can tuck into wellies (fold carefully into long socks to keep creases minimal) Keep them ankle length so you can whip off wellies and put on ballet flats once you get back to the car without too much fuss.
Then you don't have to worry too much about mud/mucky feet - but watchout for mud splashing above the socks!

Make sure you have layers on so if it's hot you can walk in a tshirt - have a scarf to put on to make you look more "done" in the pub once you are back (much better than faffing with necklaces). Amazing how hot you can get even when it's chilly.

Take make up and comb so you can smarten up in the loo as soon as you reach pub. Baby wipes also useful if you need to wipe any muck off.

Does this sound ok? before I married DH we used to go on long walks with his FIL/MIL and stylish SIL - they would look effortlessly cool, I struggled with the hills and always felt sweaty and shiny so this was my practised plan

ohhhh thanks ctb - that gives me a great place to start and is very well thought out. I have a new pair of red skinny jeans which I could wear, footwear might be an issue as I don't think I'll need wellies - we going to a well paved area but will probably be too cold to walk around in ballet flats. I've only got knee high boots in brown and black - not sure how they'd look with red jeans?!

I love scarfs and also have a blue and white stripped t-shirt I could wear with the jeans.

Do you think a blazer would look too OTT? I also have a short padded jacket type thing that would probably look better.

Need to think about a cardigan I think - I tent to get cold but most of mine are long length to go with skinny jeans but can't wear a long cardigan with a short coat.

We won't be walking far or fast as we'll have OAP parents with us who won't manage it - it really is more of a stroll and breath of fresh air to build our appitite to pig out on cake enjoy a sophisticated afternoon tea.
