colour challenge - can I dye a dress to make it nicer?

Hello - I love this dress that I saw in COS during the week..
www.cosstores.com/Store/Women/Zip_detail_sack_dress/6131-292480.1

It suits me shape-wise but not colour wise....any idea if I could buy it and dye it, and if so what colour might work? I suit blue, navy, black I think, but would really rather not dye it black....I think I'm a 'winter' afaik - any suggestions really gratefully received, I love the dress!

Hard to tell but would probably work ok given it's 100% cotton. I have dyed cotton stuff that's t-shirt or jeans material with good success, though they do fade a bit with washing thereafter. You're starting with a darkish green so will end up with navy realistically, even if you dye it blue.

You'll have to let us know how you get on if you do go down the dyeing route :)

The main fabric is cotton but the zip fabric and stitching won't be so they won't absorb the dye, unless you'd like the contrast??

ok - have looked into it a teeny bit more - and am thinking of dying it amazon green - www.dylon.co.uk/product.php?alias=fabric-dye-for-machine-use&products=product-info&alias-product=amazon-green
Dylon do a product called pre-dye that supposedly makes the fabric pale and receptive to new colours....anyone had a go? Not too keen to wreck a lovely dress on clumsy experimenting!

I've used the colour stripper stuff before, it works reasonably well, but you need to be careful to move the garment lots so that the colour stripper reaches all parts of the fabric. Mine wasn't totally evenly lightened, but I was only dyeing from one shade of red to a slightly brighter shade of red, so it didn't really matter.

hopefully - thanks for that info, that's brill...can I ask what colour the fabric went when you used the colour stripper?
