The Anti-Aging Beauty Bible - real or hype?

AbigailS · 25/02/2012 10:00

I've just borrowed this...
Anti-Aging Bible

I know all the products mentioned / rated were tested by women 35+, but my question is how did they select which products to test? Did the companies pay them to test and report about them, or is it the authors real choices. I think what I'm really asking is how much can I trust the list of top products or is it a subtle form of advertising as most of the top products are pricey?

whoops
Anti-Ageing not anti-aging

Funny you should ask this as I just received a package from Beauty Bible yesterday as I was finally accepted as a tester for the next anti-ageing version.
Not sure how the products are chosen but what I've received is a good cross section of well known products that I would have potentially chosen had I gone into Boots looking for a product. Only one of the products is something I've never heard of.

Fair question about how the BB guys actually chose the products to test. I'm sure there is some element of the companies approaching them but I'm guessing that BB need to ensure their integrity and given they are well known and have some clout themselves, I'm sure they can equally approach companies requesting product.

Don't know the answer and it would be good to know. JoFairly is on MN so she has responded to other queries in the past.

Meanwhile, I'm awaiting my testing instructions and understand from other testers that it is a very rigorous process with lots of written reviews/questions to ensure it's a thorough and accurate assessment of the products by RL women.
Looking forward to looking 10 years younger...Grin

Jo Fairley takes her BB very seriously. I think they take note of new product launches and choose the products themselves. Companies are desperate to be chosen (well, if they believe in their product they are) as the BB is one of the most highly respected testing sources in the industry. They demand that women answer every question they ask and also that they finish the entire pot of what they get give. Also - they are only allowed to use it on one side of their face (I'm almost certain I have my facts right there!!). I do know that the highest rating ever given to a face cream went to Loccitane Immortalle Divine cream and it got something like 9.1

Nothing has ever received a 10/10. They also produce the Green Beauty Bible for all you ladies who don't like chemicals Grin

Jo posts here so she may come and explain it :)

dingdong3 · 25/02/2012 12:39

Ooo..well in that case, I'm looking forward to looking younger then on half of my face...

mrsmartin · 25/02/2012 12:50

hehe...I've been testing hydrotenser on DH's left eye and after two weeks I now have to 'even him up' - veryfunny Grin

fox - it would be great if JO came on...she is a true guru of all things beautifying...

AbigailS · 25/02/2012 12:50

Thanks everyone. I'm more reassured now and will start counting the pennies (££). I was very tempted with the L'Occitane Cream.

abi - if you decide to get the Loccitane cream get it here so that you can return it if it doesn't suit you...it's alot of money to spend on something that isn't quite right. Smile

Housewife2010 · 25/02/2012 16:11

Liz Earle's Cleanse & Polish got 10/10.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 25/02/2012 16:17

Cleanse and Polish gave me spots - I was gutted because I love the smell of it.

Bucharest · 25/02/2012 16:27

I think it says (I read my Mum's at Christmas)they are sent products to test?
Which would explain why there's not very many truly high end stuff (Chanel, Estee L etc) but lots of quality but not-that-mega-international-famous stuff? (Liz E etc)

I have a sample of the L'occitane divine cream on right this minute....>>>>> Grin

Remus- C+P made me look like I'd snogged a brillo pad when I first tried it, in fact I asked Herself on the webchat why, and she said to try using half measure and just once a day...I now use it at night, and am very very gentle at taking it off, and it's fine. I love the smell too!

Bucharest · 25/02/2012 16:29

PS It was the BB that made me realise I was using my Clarins Instant Smooth putty wrong as well, I was using it as a line filler, when I should have been slopping it all over as a primer. T'is truly fab and I urge you all to buy it!

kerpob · 25/02/2012 16:31

I was also selected as a tester for the first edition and it is as mentioned quite rigorous both in terms of how the products are used and how you report on them. You don't get paid but you are given the products for a small p&p fee to try out. I came across a couple of products I would happily pay for now (and do) and others I really didn't like. it was fun. I would do it again!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 25/02/2012 16:59

Snogging brillo pads eh? Is that something I should have tried by now? :)

Am in love with Olay Regenerist stuff now - and easier to get hold of.

dingdong3 · 25/02/2012 17:39

I got two Estee Lauder products in my pack yesterday. And some Soap and Glory, Avon, Bliss and Fake Bake and some other less well known products, but plenty of well known names!

mrsmartin · 25/02/2012 18:03

housewife - I stand corrected, it must just be the highest rated face cream. I'm one of the few people that wasn't all that impressed with C&P - I don't like the smell and it just doesn't perform as well as other cleansers I've tried. EVE LOM is the ultimate but elemis pro radience is a close second for me.

dingdong totally jealous...I'm too young to be a guinea pig Sad

dingdong3 · 25/02/2012 18:30

every cloud and all that mrsmartin Grin

dingdong3 · 25/02/2012 18:33

Interestingly, I don't rate C&P either mrsmartin. Good to hear I'm not alone. I'd far prefer Eve Lom also and currently use Neal's Yard Wild Rose Beauty Balm which is very similar to Eve Lom.

mrsmartin · 25/02/2012 18:42

I shall put it on my list of things to try dingdong...ta!!

Bucharest · 25/02/2012 19:55

Apparently the N7 age defence cleansing balm is also like Eve Lom Hmm I did try that (the N7) but found it runny now that I'm used to C+Pand Elemis.
