Jean leg length dilemma. What do you do?

I need 31.5 inch leg jeans so does that mean I will need to always have them taken up half an inch. skinnies look fine rumpled round the ankle but boot cuts look better spot on. Is it a fashion faux pas to turn jeans up?

Are there any recommended online services to alter clothes as I cannot find someone locally?

I always get my jeans taken up, don't see why it would be a faux pas. Surely it's more stylish to wear jeans at the right length? I've also had jeans taken in at the waist to make them fit better (great idea until I found out I was pregnant just a month later!). I get them done at my local dry cleaners, so I don't know about online services I'm afraid.

I always find they shrink a bit after a few washes, so personally I wouldn't worry about half an inch and I'd just let the washing machine and drier sort it out. However, I agree with you that jeans/trousers look best the right length. Have you asked at your local dry cleaners? They can usually send things off to be shortened.

I always have mine taken up too - and I also get it done at the dry cleaners. They charge £10

If you have a sewing machine, it's easy to hem jeans yourself here

AgeingFop · 23/02/2012 09:38

That's an interesting way to hem jeans, Zachary. I've done mine, but have simply chopped off the last half-inch or whatever, used a zig-zag stitch to stop it fraying, turned it up inside, then sewed all around with the appropiate coloured (or contrasting) thread. Looks as good as the original, if I do say so myself.

Having said all that, turn-ups do seem to be becoming fashionable in an 80s sort of way. So maybe don't bother!

Thank you. I was just about to embark on turning up 2 pairs of jeans (skinnies but over the foot length). Something else to procrastinate about. Do you think that method would work for skinnies or would the fold get in the way. Oh look a whole morning putting things off - fantastic. will have another coffee while I think ... and maybe cake too!
