Highlights in dark hair

I'm getting my hair cut at the weekend and want to book an appointment to change the colour too. I have darkish brown hair and quite fancy highlights. What sort of highlights might suit me?

I would go for a tint 'glow' with additional T section hi-lights. I'm well off all over hi-lights and I cant abide T section blonde hi-lights on dark hair. For class I wouldnt go too blonde, keep to shades around your colour. I had a disaster last year when a so called colour expert completely bleached my hair when I told them I wanted natural. Went to a better salon and had a dark blonde tint all over (cover grey perfect) with T section in two golden blonde hi-lights it looks great without all those stripes.

Thanks bacon, that's really helpful. I have past the shoulder length hair with a few strands of grey so I'm hoping highlights will cover it up nicely. So I would go for a light brown or dark blonde colour? I have pale skin so I need to be careful not to look washed out.

I had all over bleach highlights when I was a student and it was awful - I looked like I was going seriously grey.

Can anyone think of someone famous with highlighted dark hair? I'm thinking it might be best to take a picture.

kim kardashian, kate beckinsale, eva longoria, jen lopez...all have had their dark hair highlighted at some point...

Thanks mrsmartin - Kate Beckinsale seems closest to my colouring.

Why don't you like all over highlights bacon?

it depends what sort of look your going for? def take pics, this will help the stylist alot! im a hairdresser and prefer it when clients bring in pics cos whats what u think is one colour the stylist might think is another IYKWIM. I think kate becks hair is absolutly gorg! as for the highlights covering your grey-they might not necessarily 'cover' them but will def help blend them and make them less obvious when your roots come through. if you already have colour on your hair then they will prob have to use bleach to lift the hair and then tone it to the colour you want. hope this helps!

Thanks er1507 My hair has been coloured with semi permanent dye about 3 months ago. Will this affect the colour?

I had some golden low lights put in my dark hair today. I usually have caramel ones, but wanted to go lighter without the bleach. It looks nice tbh. I am at that stage (am 41) that I look a bit washed out if my hair is too dark IYSWIM.
