Silver roots/brown dyed hair - how to go silver?

I am 34 and my roots are mainly silvery white (think gandalf...)! There are still some brown hairs in there too but the roots are very obvious, since the rest of my hair is dyed a warm brown (red bits in the light). I am sick of having to go and get my roots done every 5 weeks (and they are very obvious by then) and was considering going silver but I can't go down the grow out the dye/chop it off root. My hair is just past my shoulders and in good condition - mainly straight with a slight wave. I am probably trying to grow it another couple of inches, I seem to suit longer hair best (big nose, etc which looks even worse with shorter hair).

So - what should I do? I have been blonde before and didn't suit it - I think because it was a yellow based blonde. Should I go for highlights, so regrowth isn't so obvious? Get my hair bleached and then dyed a silvery colour, if that is even possible?

I don't want to look like an old hag and have seen some pics on the net of beautiful young women with silver (naturally) hair. I am pale skinned too, what would be the best thing to do - does anyone know? I have a hair appointment to get my roots done brown again on Tues.....

Thanks so much in advance!!

If you don't want to go shorter, then highlights is probably the only route for blending what you have with the new growth - unless you can go cold turkey and just live with the growing out badger stripe!

Talk with your stylist about non-brassy highlights, it should be possible.

Going grey looking great- was a great site. They now have a facebook page which may offer you some inspiration and answers. HTH.

it is poss to lighten your hair with bleach and then tone but how light it goes depends on the build up of colour u have through the mid lenght and ends, it is also the quickest option. if u go for highlights then ask them to use cooler shades, they're usually ash/violet/pearl colours, dont be put off by the tones, they all counteract warm/brassiness.

Ooh, pleased I found this, I was going to ask a similar question, I am wanting to embrace the grey at 33!

Is there a home kit version of stripping your hair dye out? I have medium / dark brown hair and there is quite a bit of grey on the roots and poking through the dye! The regrowth isn't too noticable as i've stuck close to my own hair colour, but am wondering i=f I stripped the dye out I'd see a lot more grey?

Any help appreciated!
