I need a dress for a ball

Hello,

Can you help? Am going to a posh-ish ball at Easter and need a dress.

I am 16/18 and curvy with bug bum etc. I like black and navy (dark colours anyway) and long sleeves, probably maxi length too. My budget is about £100, but can stretch...a little!

I also like vintage 60's and 70's if it helps.

Can anyone recommend a dress they have seen? Or like the look of?

Thank you x

how dressy?

KatyMac · 10/02/2012 22:50

too plain

KatyMac · 10/02/2012 22:58

blue

WomanInTheMoon · 10/02/2012 22:59

Thank you, though I'm not sure the first one might be a bit old for me, I'm 35, have yet to buy from Alexon. I like the second one better but yeah it is quite plain. Could be jazzed up with jewellery I suppose. I think I would worry how clingy it would be?!

I like that Phase Eight one, do you think it would be dressy enough?

Long sleeves/long skirt is hard to find tbh

KatyMac · 10/02/2012 23:06

lovely

mrsmartin · 10/02/2012 23:06

Are you dead-set on sleeves - this is stunning

also this one with a bore glam belt and fabulous heels and earrings

And this colour is lovely - maybe wear with a black lace jacket?

I know!
Thank you for having a look though, I really appreciate it.

Half or 3/4 length sleeves would be fine too - as long as the bingo's are covered

Oooo that Mary Portas one is lovely, I like it in black!

blue again

wildfig · 10/02/2012 23:15

I've tried that Mary Portas one on when I was looking for a dress for a similar event, and can confirm it is lovely, and feels very expensive on. It does come up smallish, and it has a high slit up the side but I think it's a dress that would look better on a size 16/18 than it would on a 8/10. It's really elegant, and a steal at the sale price. (The green is greener in real life than it looks in the photos - the sizing/styling is so erratic in the Mary Portas range that it makes you wonder if the samples they shot for the website were completely different from what went into production.)

WomanInTheMoon · 10/02/2012 23:21

I think I'll pop into town tomorrow and see if I can try it on - I really like it, even in the green (and me being such a bright colour wuss!)
I havent tried any of the Mary Portas clothes yet, so am not aware of the size differences but you get that with lots of clothes these days.

Katymac - could you link the 'blue again' one, the link just brings me back to this page. Ta

There are some beautiful black ones on this site but more than £100...

WomanInTheMoon · 10/02/2012 23:30

Over budget but gorgeous

Blue

mrsmartin · 10/02/2012 23:33

I love that one too - it is pricer but an investment? My friend uses the site alot and says the quality is really great

mrsmartin · 10/02/2012 23:34

LOVE the gohst dress but underwear would also have to be full length... :o

mrsmartin · 10/02/2012 23:35

ghost!

WomanInTheMoon · 10/02/2012 23:41

oh my god - that is lovely tethersend, the little buttons running down the side are gorgeous. Thats my favourite so far! What is their sizing/fit like?

Haha mrsmartin, I am terrible for buying something as an investment!
This is great though I never would have thought to look at these websites, thanks again.

No idea, sorry. Just liked the 30s look of the dress. They tend to sell out of larger sizes fast though...

WomanInTheMoon · 11/02/2012 00:08

Heh wildfig - I saw that myself on the Ghost website, am def not that brave!

OP posts:
KatyMac · 11/02/2012 07:24

Sorry I couldn't find it when I went back

FauxFox · 11/02/2012 07:48

how about this one a bit over budget but looks very flattering? or what about a bombshell dress? or a 50s circle dress with a bolero? I do think that unless you are willing to wear spanx type things (which I am not Grin) a dress with more structure is much more flattering than the drapey styles which tend to cling to any lumps and bumps.
