Ok after some debate and help on here I have 'invested' in a red Davina dress.
The reason for purchase is DD christening in a couple of weeks time.

So I have done my usual thing and am now fretting about a) how to wear it on the day and b) how I can reinvent it for other occasions.

I seriously lack imagination - and for the christening it's looking like black shoes and a black fitted jacket... But would love some different ideas!

Can I wear it in worky situations despite the shouty colour?

Black jacket and shoes sound great for work but maybe a leetle formal for the christening unless it is an uber smart one? a scarf or brooch/corsage might soften the look but I would also consider a wrap or a cream jacket and nude shoes to make it less office-y.

It's a gorgeous colour. To get max wear I would consider whether you could wear with a black fine knit roll neck underneath, opaques and boots in winter or adding a cropped denim jacket and wedge sandals in summer for smart/casual wear.

Thanks FauxFox all makes sense - I like your ideas very much - and this highlights perfectly how useless I am at styling - always end up looking a bit too safe and now adding in a bit middle aged / mumsy! The dress itself is fab though!
