Long Hair on a mid-30's woman

Hi

I am turning 36 next month and am fed up with my hair style.

I have had long (past shoulder length) hair for at least 10 years if not more and I fancy a change.

However, I do like the length - others not so keen- but I would like to keep it longer.

It is generally straight with a slight wave and is highlighted (but not overly so - just enough to give a lift - roots are not overly obvious growing out) and is quite fine.

Last time I tried a long fringe but after i left hairdressers it never really sat right.

I like layers to give a bit of body other wise it just sits there

Generally I am asking what style should I go for if I leave it long or should I chop it to shoulder length and see what happens.

All and any advice greatly appreciated.

I'm growing mine out from The asymmetric KL haircut. Good lord it is a pain.

I hope to have a shoulder length bob by the time I'm 35.... and when I get there I'm sure I'll cut it all off again Grin

i think longer hair generally looks better on anyone, you can do so much with it

even really old (usually hippy) women look more interesting with long hair

I have to say, I disagree with you there SEA, I know very few women who look better with long hair. And as for doing more with it, I know that as soon as my hair skims my shoulders, that's it. Ponytail city.

Thanks for all the advice

An still trying to decide what to do but am now having discussion with dh over partings

Have a side parting and it suits me better than a middle parting. But he tells me his opinion obviously means nothing. I have told him that I have taken his opinion on board but disagree with him and therefore will not be following it Grin

I look dreadful with a middle parting! It hangs like curtains and if not straightened I do a marvellous impression of Rawlf from the muppets!

I am a fan of long hair.

Mine is a bit like carla bruni's style, sort of, long and brown with a side fringe.

It is so versatile, it can look glam up or down, or pulled back for sport.

Bit of a pain to wash and dry in winter though. Am 40.

I am the same age as OP. Well May rather than march.

I have long dark hair, side parting medium length layers. If i cut it short i would look awful. My face just doesn't suit short hair.

I think you should dress/style to suit you and your lifestyle not your age/latest trend

Mine was down my back for the last 10 years and I went to Toni and guy this week and had about 4 inches taken off so I can still tie it up on days I can't be arsed to blowdry and had the bottom thinned out.
It's so shiny and lovely and is just below shoulder length.
I dried it today and it took half the usual time
I am 32 and expecting no2 so wanted an easy yet stylish look
She framed the front round my face so it graduates from chin length to full length.
It's like Claire Danes

I am truly fickle when it comes to my hair (like my dmum) - its been very very long (what I call nipple length) and very very short (think Victoria Beckham c2002) and various lengths in between.

I think you need to find a hairdressor that you like and trust - one who listens and takes your lead on what you don't like (nothing worse than having your ears exposed if you hate them!) but who can advise you on what would look good.

It's taken me years to realise that the secret to fabulous hair is partly the cut itself but also what suits your face shape and your hair type not necessarily what's in fashion or what we think we should or ought to be doing with our hair.

Good luck! When I had my long hair off I went incredibly short which didn't half shock everyone!

I should add I am heading to my mid 30s and currently sporting a very 60's style bob - chin length at the front and shorter at the back with lots of thinning out!
