What do I wear to a hotel wedding?

My lovely db is getting married at the end of feb in a very lovely looking hotel- sit down meal for 40 and evening disco with more people coming.
I don't know what to wear!
I have a lovely red wool knitted suit, suits me but feels a bit church wedding iyswim.
I have a velvet devore dress I love but it is predominantly black.
I have a purply liberty print "day" dress.
Or I have a bright backless maxi, but it's only cotton.
Does anyone have any thoughts? Or advice? I also have a random blue hat and cream fascinator, and a lovely purple velvet scarf?
Thank you.

Do you want something new? Coast and phase eight do some lovely frocks that are hotel wedding appropriate.

I have tried on loads of phase eight dresses and concluded they don't suit my body shape! I have looked in the coast sale, but they are still a bit pricey, and also very weddingy- in a jacket and hat sort of a way. I'm a funny shape- top heavy and short legged so I find it hard to buy dresses, but I'd really like to wear one! Do you think people go more party dress than suit in a hotel?

Ime (both as a guest and a bride of a hotel wedding twice Wink), guests tend to dress in a similar manner to a church wedding (perhaps not quite so formal as you would if you were the sort of person who dressed very formally to a church wedding iyswim ?). There were people with dresses & jackets, suits, hats, fascinators etc. and I'm not sure you would notice any difference to the attire worn for a church wedding.

I think what I am trying to say (admitedly, badly) is that you could wear your red suit without worrying about being overdressed. The day dress and cotton maxi sound a bit too informal imo. The devore dress is perhaps a bit evening ? (although its difficult to say without seeing it)

I agree. I had a hotel wedding and have attended prob 7-8 and everyone wore 'church' attire except hats really, fascinatorsvyes, hats not really. Except my own, thinking about mine both mums wore hats and my aunt. Your red suit sounds great.

Oh thank you, I love the red suit. I was worried people for the evening would come in party dresses and I'd look frumpy. I will try and find a really nice top to go underneath so I can take off the jacket!

I must admit, I do like silky dresses for hotel weddings, how old are you?

I'm 40, bride and groom are 36 ( her second time, but think she is wearing "proper" wedding dress. She is lovely lovely and I'm very excited but it's been arranged quickly so haven't had lots of time to plan).
Also am 5'4 an size 12/14. My dsis is annoyingly tall and thin so must find out what she is wearing!

www.east.co.uk/store/Velvet+Devore+Dress/BLA-BLACKX/10/100000143368/. This is the east dress, it's my favourite apart from the colour!

I think that dress would be fine as well. What will you wear with it at the end of Feb (assuming some of the photos etc. will be outside) ? I personally don't think black is an issue at weddings - particularly if you accessorised it with light shoes/bag etc. Maybe a paschmina in the nude/cream sort of colour of the underneath bit of the dress with nude/cream shoes and bag (and the cream fascinator you already have, if that's your "thing") ?

talkingnonsense · 29/01/2012 21:39

I guess I need to find out if the photos are outside. Not a huge fascinator fan, but feel my hair will need something so it looks like I've made the effort!

I really like it and think with nude/cream accessoriesit will be perfect. I love black and cream for weddings, elegant!

serin · 29/01/2012 22:17

I like the dress and would wear it with a cream fitted jacket.

Wow! That is some reduction in the sale !

talkingnonsense · 30/01/2012 17:10

Black and cream does sound sophisticated! I will try it and see, its a yellowy colour as it is just the gaps between the velvet iyswim. Not cream shoes though as I have size 8 feet. The photos are outside so I guess the red suit would be a warm second choice ( can't link as its too old!).
