I get my hair coloured blonde at a hair dresser but in order to save money i'm thinking about doing myself at home but i am worry about it looking really cheap! If anyone uses a good blonde dye can you let me know which one. Thanks!

I have tried many and my only advice is... Don't do it. Perhaps someone wiser and more handy will contradict me (I hope so) but I have variously managed to make my hair red, strawberry blonde, green (yes, green) and white. Each time I have had to then pay a professional to deal with it or colour it brown again...

I am not very good at DIY beauty tho'...

MonsterBookOfTysons · 29/01/2012 15:14

My blonde never goes blonde, the pre lightener does not work and I am giving up and going back to red! :)

Racheybabez · 29/01/2012 16:04

my hair is dark brown with red tones schwarzkopf xxl live blonde 01 ice blonde takes me a lovely blonde if you have brassy orange tones use a silver shampoo aswell takes a few washes but it will be fine its not white just a lovely creamy blonde
hth
ps i trained as a hairdresser so no what works and what dont on my hair

cornsix · 29/01/2012 16:06

racheybabez - does the colour not go flat after a few goes?

Racheybabez · 29/01/2012 16:15

no colour has not faded at all stays really well (alot do fade the belle colour did) but not the schwarzkopf one
i dont use the silver shampoo every wash once or twice a week
and normal shampoo and conditioner every day

chilipeppers · 29/01/2012 19:52

Thanks all! Like you Topaz I'm not very good at DIY hair/beauty! And am clueless so have to ask Racheybabez what is silver shampoo and where do i get it? Why does that make a difference to the colour?
I'm scared of going green now!!

I used to use the Ice Blonde XXL colour too, plus a beige Born Blonde toner over the top to lift any brassiness. It used to go a really lovely slightly (only very slightly) almost pinky blonde.

Eeek, just checked, don't think they make the toner any more!!! :(

Racheybabez · 29/01/2012 21:18

you wont go green lol
the silver shampoo takes away any brassiness (orangy tones) instead of using toner
you can get it anywhere boots, savers, superdrug ranging from £1 - £20

Reenypip · 29/01/2012 22:57

I use LIVE 00b the lightest pre lightener blonde.

TopazMortmain · 29/01/2012 23:55

Green was a result of colouring prelightened locks with a darker shade... I looked like Kermit...

Second blue shampoo. You can normally get it from grand salons but best bet is those random old pharmacies frequented by pensioners. It's used to 'brighten' greg hair and the old fashioned pensioner version a thousand times cheaper than the posh stuff.

UmmOfUmbridge · 30/01/2012 06:49

I have my hair highlighted about every 4 months and in between do my roots with nice and easy. Looks okay. Obviously expensive salon trips would work better but it keeps my roots at bay. I also use blue shampoo. Tip - don't use it for every wash. You WILL have people asking why you dyed your hair an interesting shade of purple. It's subtle but you can see it! I quite liked it actually :)

chilipeppers · 30/01/2012 06:55

That is all really helpful, thanks everyone! I'll keep you posted of how it goes, wish me luck on my first DIY colouring!

TopazMortmain · 30/01/2012 08:43

Good luck! Grin

Earthymama · 30/01/2012 08:51

I always dye my hair at home. I nearly faint at how much I have to pay for a good haircut. My hairdresser always says I do as good a job as they could.

It helps that I have short hair!

TheScarlettPimpernel · 30/01/2012 09:00

It ruins your hair. Don't do it. In the past I've had to have a good 4 or 5 inches lopped off the ends from having used various variations on Sun-In spray Blush

Granted that stuff is probably worse for you than the posh boxes of it, but honestly nothing looks worse (or more ageing) than that over-bleached candy-floss type hair that looks like it'll snap if you touch it

morecoffeepleaseholdthecake · 31/01/2012 09:29

Hi chili How did go? I am in the same situation at the mo! I have had the colour sat on the shelf for over a month now. I was about to post something similar to you and saw your thread! I think I may do it today!

ohbugrit · 31/01/2012 09:38

It depends how blonde you want it. I have mousy brown hair with lots of grey and I use Nice n Easy 102 which gives me a lovely caramelly colour - it isn't light bright blonde but it is really natural and I often get compliments on it.

AngelDelightIsIndeedDelightful · 31/01/2012 10:14

I tried it once but it wasn't a good result. It came out gingery. I put up with it for a day and then dyed it back to brown. There's nothing wrong with giving it a go, but maybe have some brown in your cupboard just in case?

chilipeppers · 31/01/2012 20:49

I haven't been brave enough to try it yet! Having it cut tomorrow by a new hair dresser so going to have a chat with him.
Did you do it yet morecoffee?

morecoffeepleaseholdthecake · 01/02/2012 00:41

No, I am also too scared....maybe tommorow! Confused

chilipeppers · 01/02/2012 20:27

Well i chickened out and went to the hair dressers today, had a lovely new cut and booked in for a colour next week!
Did you do it morecoffee? How did it go?

morecoffeepleaseholdthecake · 01/02/2012 21:13

I did it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And it looks good very pleased and will certainly be doing it again. I got really panicy at one point though Grin. I thought I would give it a go and if it looked crap then I could just ring around and get someone to fix it this afternoon. But no need! Maybe you should give it a go anyway chili especially as you have a colour booked which could be used to fix it! win-win!

chilipeppers · 02/02/2012 19:43

Oh brave morecoffee! Glad it went well! What did you use?

OP posts:
Reenypip · 02/02/2012 21:46

What did you use morecoffee?
Because my hair naturally dark I have to use a lightener. I use Live 00b. And works just about to get it to blonde.
I have two tone hair, bleach blonde on top and dark brown underneath. I couldn't decide between the two so have both colours lol and I like the two tone contrast between the two together.
