help please - what to do about my hair.

I am in my mid 40s and my hair has, in the last 6 months, gone from being fairly thin but ok to falling out, breaking off and being hideous.

I now have new shampoo from the hair salon, I'm washing it very gently, I'm hardly blowdrying it at all and I'm really taking care of it but it's still breaking, falling out and generally thin, wispy and crap.

I'm tempted to get it all cut off and start again (it's shoulder length now and i like the length) but I'm worried that as it's so thin and naff, any short style will just look pants. I do suit short hair apparently and have had it short before but never having had it this thin and fine before, I'm nervous.
Any ideas please?

TIA

have you had a health issue causing hair problems? throid/anaemia/menopause?

guffaw · 27/01/2012 23:00

thyroid

It would seem that i am peri-menopausal guffaw.
I take a hair, nail and skin supplement (have done for about 18 months) and I'm just about to change my multi vitamin to one that is more geared to the menopause.
Other than that, I'm fairly healthy. I saw a nutritionist yesterday and after having done a food diary she has noticed that I don't eat enough protein which i will now rectify. I exercise about 5 days a week, either pilates, gym or running but I wouldn't say I exercise 'hard' and push myself too much at all. I exercise for pleasure mainly.

I saw a thing on telly ages ago about someone whose hair was thining and they were advised to eat a lot more eggs. It worked!

what a coincidence Ploink! Because yesterday i was told i don't eat enough protein I have had a poached egg for breakfast Smile.

right, I'm just off to add more eggs to the shopping list. Thanks for that Ploink.

I seem to recall that show Ploink, wasn't it something about the positive effects of dairy on menopause or something?

mckenzie · 28/01/2012 09:08

I don't like getting old!

It was actually about a man. His hair was very thin but not male pattern baldness, just nutrionally deficient sort of thin. They told him to have several omelettes a week.

I do wonder about collesterol though because don't eggs raise it?

Indeed. I have have a family history of heart disease so have to be careful. I think I need to investigate the difference between the egg white and the yolk. I think it might be that one is 'better' for you than the other.
