I'm looking to replace our sofas. I'm thinking of having 2 v. large leather sofas.

We have beech wooden floors, pale yellow walls. The ground-floor is very open plan, so I have quite a lot of space. In the living area there isn't too much else - a black upright piano, white marble fireplace with black hearth and a couple of antique pine bookcases.

So what will look best:

Ivory or dark brown leather sofas?

Cream, "neutral" or brown wool rug?

Lodger suggested chocolate leather, but I think that I've changed too many nappies in the last 4 yesr for that to look appealing.

I'm crap at visualising.

is the room bright or dark? as if its a bright room you can mix dark and light colours, if dark room then only light colours to keep the room feel "big" as if you put dark colours in a dark room it will close up the space....

I would go for chocolate brown, much more forgiving with regard to marks and stains, I would have thought.

hoxtonchick · 20/01/2006 09:54

NOT ivory! any kind of brown good.

BudaBabe · 20/01/2006 09:55

The choc brown gets my vote too.

My sis has one and it looks really good. It's hard to get the right brown though - some are too similar to nappy contents!!!! You need a really dark brown.

Frieda · 20/01/2006 10:22

Yes, dark brown in a really bitter chocolate colour. Possibly veering towards Burgundy. Definitely not Ivory, though. Totally impractical (and possibly a little bit Footballers' Wives )

tracyk · 20/01/2006 10:23

I like the contrast between light in the background and dark furniture. All pale - too wishy washy.

Frieda · 20/01/2006 10:25

And I'd go for a cream carpet. It will make your room look nice and light and really emphasise the space. (Mind you, you'll need to make sure Lord Muck takes his wellies off after tramping round the estate)

tracyk · 20/01/2006 10:37

cream carpet ????????? NO WAY!!!!!!!! not with kids. I have a cream carpet in the bathroom that is used for 10 mins in the morning and 20 mins at night and it is black!!!

Frieda · 20/01/2006 11:10

I think it probably depends on the age of your kids and your lifestyle. We had a cream carpet in the sitting room of our last house, but we never ate in there and DS played either in his room or in the playroom. Mind you, the cat did manage to create a nasty yellow patch which we had to cover up with a potted plant when we came to sell the house . It did make our room look lovely and light, though.

ladymuck · 20/01/2006 12:11

Well the leather described as "chocolate" could have equally been described as "runny poo". Just too orangey brown for me. Dark Brown seems to be the winner then?

The room is dark though.

Ds's are 2 and 4. I was going to wait until next year, but I need something more sophisticated and less battered now!

Don't want to be a footballers wife just yet though!

try for an antique brown?? I bought a lovely suite from Leather chairs of Bath when I got my dads inheritance a good few years ago. It cost a bloody fortune - but it gets better looking each year.
I'd go for not cream carpet - but a sisal type natural colouring. iykwim
