What is your best ever S&B "investment piece"?

By which I mean amazing cost per wear and always make you happy when you put it on - does not necessarily have to be very pricey, but I'd like to hear about those too!!
FWIW mine are a Gap down coat which is just brilliant and nearly 6 years old - every time I put it on I think - I wish I'd got two of these! They have never done such a good one since. And a MaxMara black pencil skirt, 12 years old and worn at least once a week.

Black patent leather riding boots reduced from £89 to £60 in the m&s sale, used the m&s vouchers that Sky sent me so cost me nothing really and I wear them daily :)

Zara leather jacket, bought when I was 16, worn more or less daily since. I am 29.

Am currently hunting for a replacement as it is finally beginning to die Sad

I no longer have my best ever investment piece but I miss it badly. It was a Viktor and Rolf jacket that I got at 80pc off in the sale (it was still expensive). It was a black wool jacket in the style of a leather biker jacket and it was fabulous. It was smart enough that I could wear it to work but it was still cool. It's hard to describe, but the fabric was a kind of boucle, and the jacket had zips on the cuffs as well as a zip-front, with little tassels on the zips.

I wore it all the time for years and then sadly it eventually became too old.

Callipo · 18/01/2012 22:13

ooo that sounds lovely redwing - I want one too!

A pair of Pied a Terre leather boots for £10 down from almost £200. I've had them for about 16 years, had them resoled twice and they still look like new :) they had them in black and brown. I got the black and have kicked myself ever since for not getting the brown as well!

I've also got a black leather blazer that DH bought me for my 21st so 11 years ago. It looks lovely with jeans and still looks new. I don't wear it much any more though, I'll have to dig it out :)

Right at the mo I'm in total bliss after having a soak in Aromatherapy Associates Relax bath oil.
Oh my god the stuff is amazing.
My skin smells gorgeous and you only need the tiniest amount .
I am an insomniac but this stuff makes me want to sleep for England.

Topshop jersey dress bought before dd (now 8) was around. It's incredibly flattering (it has a lovely hang from the shoulders and is shaped by means of pleats and pockets to give it an hour-glass shape), I wear it about once a week, and it doesn't need ironing (yay!).

MuslinSuit · 18/01/2012 22:36

GhDs, and my beautiful tomato red Tommy Hilfiger duffle coat.

I had some Diesel jeans which I loved, but got too fat for so gave to charity. I plan to lose weight and treat myself to some this year before I get too old for them Smile

Hoolet · 18/01/2012 22:37

Alexander McQueen Dress down from £1000 to £300. Most expensive item of clothing I've ever bought. Feel brilliant every time I've worn it and even though that's probably only about 8 times, it's a proper outfit on it's own.

A Levi's denim tunic I got for £10 in the sale in 1999 has lasted and lasted. A Whistles military jacket from 2004 that I just love (£54 worn at least once a week since).

Grumpla · 18/01/2012 22:41

Many moons ago, my dad bought me a really lovely pale grey silk slip dress from Warehouse for my leaving do at the end of sixth form. It's now a bit obscene tight without a sensible cardi on top / layer underneath but I still wear it a few times a year, it is slightly crushed-effect so rolls up into nothing for holidays as well. It was £45 which I know he thought was a ridiculous amount to spend on a wee scrap of a dress but he paid up anyway and I think I've had his money's worth out of it by now Grin

My Hobbs black patent long boots that I got in the sale 3 years ago. i have had loads of wear out of them, great for work or the weekend.

Am loving my new Max Mara down coat, has a belt so its flattering and feels wonderful wearing it.

brighthair · 19/01/2012 01:08

Tan kurt Geiger boots. Knee high. Last pair at Cheshire Oaks, reduced from £150 to £35 Grin they make me smile

Bienchen · 19/01/2012 08:05

Black L K Bennett fitted leather boots, a sale find about 6 years ago, just starting to wear at the toe.

Taupe Boden merino tunic bought in the sale 18 months ago, wear at least once a week. Ditto Miss Sixty woollen mini dress which is about 6 years old,

Some Hermes scarves and a silver necklace for instant lift after work or when I need to look smart.

A navy merino jumper which is probably 12 years old and still looks brand new, worn once a week if temperature permits.

My newest Miss Sixty skinny jeans that fit just right, so happy I went back for another pair. Cost £24.99 instead of £130 (TK Maxx)

ENormaSnob · 19/01/2012 08:24

Some Ralph Lauren jeans from Cheshire oaks.

Unfortunately I can't fasten them ATM Blush

worldgonecrazy · 19/01/2012 08:35

I have a blue/purple/black patterned Gucci wrap dress. It is my dress that comes out when I have no idea what to wear, or if I'm going to a smart restaurant for lunch, funerals, weddings, interviews. It cost several hundred but has served me well and will continue to do so for many years.

Karl Lagerfeld once said "Don't buy anything you won't wear in 10 years time", and that advice has served me well.

TheScarlettPimpernel · 19/01/2012 08:40

A pure cashmere Jaeger black sweater. It was down from about £160 to £36 in a BrandAlley sale. Every time I put it on (which is about 2 or 3 times a week!) I feel like a film star cos it's cashmere, you know? Blush

CountBapula · 19/01/2012 08:50

A gorgeous black long-sleeved belted crepe dress with tulip skirt from Reiss. It was about £140 but I wore it at least once a week for two years. Too fat for it now post-DS though Blush :(

esselle · 19/01/2012 08:57

A black Burberry trench coat. I love it and wear it to death!

I got it for $260 down from $1700!

gregssausageroll · 19/01/2012 09:07

Mine are a couple of handbags. My most recent being the mumsnet scarf which is worn just about daily.

LaurieFairyCake · 19/01/2012 09:11

Brora Socks - I bought 6 pairs in the sale 2 years ago (at £15 a pair) and threw all my cheap ones out. They show no wear at all and there's nothing nicer than cashmere clod warm feet. I expect to have warm feet forever.

I even have a little laundry bag for them to be washed in.

Brora socks are currently £20 a pair in the Sale Wink but they usually fall to 15 a pair towards the end of the sale.

I also have a Boden Union Jack leather purse I bought in the sale, used it every day and shop assistants comment on it all the time - £15 and 2 years good use so far.

A 1940's handbag bought unused in its original box from ebay about 5 years ago. It's silver mesh metallic and 'modern' looking - I need no other evening bag (and my friend borrows it). Cost me about £15 - it's totally fabulous and every time I'm out people ask where I got it.

Estee Lauder Night repair serum - been using it for a year, has made a massive difference.

MrsDollyLevi · 19/01/2012 09:38

My "right shade" Bobbi Brown lippie. Wasted cash in the past but this one has been replaced (same shade I mean) and its just "me". No more lippies flung out half used.

A beautiful, stone coloured, slouchy, cashmere coat. It's now 12 yrs old. Past it's best. Was given to me as new by someone who said "it's just not me". It was £600. I have worn it and worn it and still get complimented on it, despite its worn appearance. So soft and comfy. My son used to nuzzle into it, as a toddler. I simply cannot let it go and I've never found one like it.

MistyMountainHop · 19/01/2012 18:47

HowAboutAHotCupOfShutTheHellUp · 19/01/2012 22:03

My Burberry Prorsum mac. So sophisticated !

MuslinSuit · 19/01/2012 22:57

Misty Envy

TantePiste · 19/01/2012 23:18

Mid 90s at a discount store, a very slinky black jersey knit mock turtleneck from Calvin Klein collection. Also picked up a cocoa brown one, but it unraveled at the sleeves around 2000.

Makes a huge hit with dh every time I wear it. It's very Avengers, secret agent-y.

They should absolutely revisit that collection. It was genius.

It lives in a plastic bag on a hanger now. The sleeves are just beginning to unravel.
