Outfit for opening of installation at London art gallery?

It's quite a funky, cool one.

As you can see I am in trouble already because I use words like "funky" and "cool." I am nearly 40 and I live in the sticks in my leggings.

I have bought an animal print long-sleeved minidress, any ideas what to wear with that? TIA...

Please can some kind soul help, I have been on the "Mum" thread this evening...

Erm - well, personally I wouldn't wear a leopard print mini tbh. But if I DID, I'd probably just go for black opaques, a black blazer or biker jacket and black heeled wedges or heeled ankle/shoe boots.

Notcontent · 14/01/2012 20:59

It's a bit hard to say without seeing the dress, usually you can't go wring with black opaques and black ankle boots with a mid/high heel.

PishWife · 14/01/2012 21:53

Hmm... consensus on the opaques and ankle boots, then...

Should I bin the dress and wear something else, and if so, what please?

Does the dress suit you and do you like it? If so, wear it!

PishWife · 14/01/2012 22:05

Yes and yes! I guess that's all that matters...

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 14/01/2012 22:09

Indeed! :)

OliviaMumsnet · 14/01/2012 22:28

West End or Shoreditch gallery?
This will affect your tights choice massively.
Grin

tethersend · 14/01/2012 22:30

Haha, was just about to ask the same, Olivia Grin

What's the gallery?

PishWife · 14/01/2012 22:39

Can't, it will out me as it's DH's work :)

Near Old Street... Just had a look on Google Earth and it's next door to my old HQ, small world!

OP posts:
PishWife · 14/01/2012 22:42

I guess I want Shoreditch tights then, what they?

OP posts:
OliviaMumsnet · 14/01/2012 22:42

Okay
Old Street
I would go opaque but funky colours if you can?
I always start an outfit with shoes
Disclaimer: I too live in the sticks and wear mostly leggings.Grin

PishWife · 14/01/2012 22:47

Thanks, Olivia :)

How funky is funky? this dress is basically black and rust brown... do I need bright blue or something (totally clueless face)

now intrigued to know what West End tights look like Grin

yellowraincoat · 14/01/2012 22:51

I just wouldn't over-think it. Some people will be in jeans, some people will be dressed up. Go what you feel comfortable in. Old Street is total hipster land, get a big pair of NHS specs, skinny jeans 2 inches too short and an unflattering blouse. You'll fit right in.

PishWife · 14/01/2012 22:52

Thank you yellowraincoat, that sounds more like me and is very reassuring! I am probably overthinking it because it is a big deal for DH and my first decent night out in ages...

OP posts:
OliviaMumsnet · 14/01/2012 22:55

What yellowraincoat said tbh
But West End Gallery tights are 15 denier barely black Wolford ime
(used to be a West End Gallery Gal, before I moved to the sticks and took up leggingsGrin)

tethersend · 14/01/2012 23:01

With a leopardprint dress, I'd wear black opaques and white boots. Or yellow tights and black heels. No other coloured tights. Or black opaques and platforms. And a good vintage coat, as you probably won't have room to take it off.

PishWife · 14/01/2012 23:07

Thank you all, feeling much less clueless now. I am working on the day of the opening so will have to go straight from the train to the gallery, so planning is required and this thread has been a big help.

WHITE boots? Shock

Have we gone back to the 60s without me noticing, Tethers? Grin

tethersend · 15/01/2012 10:41

Remus, every day is the 60s (or 70s) for me Grin

I have three pairs of white boots and am looking for more, one of which are original 70s go-go boots Wink

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 15/01/2012 15:25

I wondered if it was the hormones speaking - but nope, you are clearly just ever so slightly bonkers! Wink

tethersend · 15/01/2012 21:13

I do have a bit of a fixation with the late 60s/70s. I manage to keep a lid on it on S&B most of the time though, otherwise I'd be dressing you all in polyester... and I know how much you love polyester Grin

KristinaM · 15/01/2012 21:20

Are tbey white patent boots? Or as it used to be called " wet look"? Do you have a matchimg hat?

tethersend · 15/01/2012 21:53

They are not patent, just white leather lace up knee boots- they are gorgeous.

I have hats. But I would never do a white hat and boots- unless it's a white fur hat, which I do have. So, errr... yes.
